Artifacts are shown at the Fort McCoy, Wis., History Center on Aug. 5, 2022. The History Center is part of the installations Commemorative Area. The 900 block of Fort McCoy and the 11-acre area surrounding it are at the hub of the forts history-preservation efforts and is called the Commemorative Area. The Commemorative Area consists of five World War II-era buildings set aside to help tell Fort McCoy's unique story. These facilities are representative of the types found in the cantonment area when it was constructed in 1942. Three of the buildings — an administrative facility, a dining facility, and a barracks — are set up to depict Soldier life during the 1940s. Display items include a World War II chapel, bunk beds, footlockers, mannequins, and potbelly stoves. Another building highlights four different modern military training venues, and a separate facility shows various training aids. The area also has the Equipment Park. May 3, 1863 Andrew Joseph Russell This photograph is as close to a spot-news battlefield view as was technically possible during the Civil War. Made just hours after a fierce fight above Fredericksburg, Virginia, the haunting picture shows the destruction by heavy artillery shell of a Confederate caisson (a two-wheeled vehicle for artillery ammunition) and its team of eight horses. On the afternoon the Union Sixth Corps captured Maryes Heights (during the second battle of Fredericksburg), Andrew Joseph Russell crossed the Rappahannock River with his friend and superior officer General Herman Haupt, commander of the United States Military Railroad. Reconnoitering the field, they discovered this gruesome carnage blocking the road. Arrival of a shooter piece at the shelters at Heemskerk.The largest shooters piece from Van der Helst, the Vendel of Captain Roelof Bicker and Lieutenant Jan Michielsz Blauw is transported. The work is carried in the bunker from a glass truck. The bomb-free cellars were built in 1940 after the shelters in North Holland villages were not safe. The collection components of the museum were evacuated in 1939. The new cellars were put into use in 1941.

World War I - The French battleship Bouvet sinking near gallipoli 1915. In World War I, she escorted troop convoys from North Africa to France. She then joined the naval operations off the Dardanelles, where she participated in a major attack on the Turkish fortresses in the straits on 18 March 1915. During the attack, she struck a mine and sank within two minutes; only some 50 men were rescued from a complement of 710.

Dutch Gap Canal, on the James River in Virginia, April 1865, was excavated by African American troops to 1864. The Civil War project was planned to divert the James River, to allow Union gunboats to avoid the Confederate Battery Dantzler, as they advanced to Richmond. When General Benjamin Butler blew up the bulkheads on the excavation on New Years Day, 1865, the James River was insufficiently effected to bypass strong forts (BSLOC_2018_5_135)
