Night Ferries to The Hague, Delft and Leiden ca. 1652-54 Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman Dutch This drawing by the specialist of marine imagery Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman (meaning sailor” or seaman” in Dutch), is a fully developed print design, incised for transfer to the printing plate, for the artist’s best-known series, Verscheyde Schepen en Gesichten van Amstelredam” (Various Ships and Views of Amsterdam”).[1 The series, produced by Zeeman in the mid-1650s, comprises thirty-six etchings divided into three equal parts. The print that reproduces the present sheet, in reverse, is the fifth of the twelve that make up the third part. (The number inscribed at the bottom right of the drawing, if read correctly as a 29, indicates the place of the image within the entire set of thirty-six.) A Herring Buss. This unique print features the earliest representation of a herring buss. This type of vessel had been used since the 12th century for herring fishery, which was so important for the Netherlands. In portraying this ultra-Netherlandish ship, the master took some liberties and included elements from a Portuguese ship. Flemish and Portuguese shipbuilders maintained close contacts at the time.

Date: 1647.Known for tonal, monochromatic landscape paintings in his later years, the Haarlem artist Jan van Goyen made hundreds of chalk drawings from nature in his travels throughout Holland, the Southern Netherlands, and the area around Cleve. Although many of these scenes ultimately informed his paintings, rarely were they directly preparatory. These three objects tell a story of Mexicos early nineteenth-century Creole patriotism. The Mexican independence movement was fueled by Creoles, who were often denied a voice in colonial government. The 1821 Act of Independence formalized the independence that had been declared in 1810 and was signed by many Creole aristocrats, among them Don José María Gómez de Cervantes, whose portrait is on view nearby. New World figures like the Virgin of Guadalupe, who miraculously appeared to the Indian Juan Diego in 1521, and Saint Felipe de Jesús, the first Mexican-born saint, became important nationalist symbols, supporting the idea that the independence of Mexico was divinely ordained.
