This 10,000-ton tanker - the Stanvac Canberra - ran aground on a sandbank at the entrance to Fremantle Harbour on Saturday, blocked the harbour channel for four hours until it was refloated. Aerial picture shows a tug at work trying to get it off. December 1, 1954.

Mighty Monarch Dwarfs Her Tugs When Leaving For Trials -- Her assisting tugs dwarfed by the Monarch's mightiness, she is seen leaving the Tyne for North Sea Trials 2nd. Many sightseers gathered along both banks of the River Tyne to watch the 27,155-ton Shaw Savill liner Dominion Monarch leave on trials after reconversion from a troopship. In the Tyne for refit since August 8 last year, the vessel is to have exhaustive trials over a wide area of the North Sea lasting some days. The Dominion Monarch will then go to Tilbury, Essex, to prepare for her re-entry into the Australia, New Zealand service via the Cape She is expected to sail form Tilbury about December 16. Light Alloy Craft Halves Running Costs: Survey Vessel For Pakistan -- A light alloy survey vessel of a stressed-skin construction and teak-built equivalent have proved the value of new techniques in the building of small craft.At Bideford, in Devonshire, England, a light alloy vessel for light-draught survey work has been built which may well be a valuable object-lesson to boat-builders the world over. A teak equivalent has been built elsewhere and the following comparisons and up to a virtual halving of operating costs. Of the same size and for the same requirements, the teak vessel displaces 65 tons; draught 4ft. 6 ins., total horse-power 260, speed 12 knots; the light alloy craft displaces 21 tons, draws two feet nine inches and with 130 horse-power makes 13.5 knots.
