. Image group of oak with the twelve apostles praying and raising, in a circle grouped around Mary; The two front apostles (Links James, right possible Peter) are on gothic stools. Two vertical grooves are applied in the rear, (originally) possible to confirm the group in a small retable, or for a small canopy with the pigeon (Holy Spirit), which is now missing. On the back is an old label stuck with inscription, probably in 18th-century hand: this is the fire of D 'Capel in D'Calvere Street in Amsterdam Gekooome in year 1452.

The keys signifying his role as guardian of the gates to Heaven, which were given to him by Christ, are missing. Virgin and Child ca. 1270-1300 French Through the course of the thirteenth century, goldsmiths in Limoges increasingly specialized in the creation of gilded copper sculpturefreestanding, as here, or in relief, with enamel used only as a decorative accent. As Queen of Heaven, the Virgin Mary wears a crown (as does the infant Jesus), richly decorated shoes, a cloak engraved with a fur pattern, and a delicate filigree brooch. The inscription across the front of the statuette reads, in translation, “Hail Mary, full of grace.” This is more than a devotional image: with a hinged compartment set in the back of the throne, this Virgin and Child served as a tabernacle to safeguard the host, the waferof bread consecrated during the mass as the body of Christ. Laurentius. On a polygonal, profiled pedestal, it is bent with the left leg and directed sloping with the look. The cup with large crumbling shows curly hair. In the left hand, he carries a book on the pouch, the judge, in which the attribute is missing, he keeps out. He is dressed in Dalmatics, Albe and Amict, about the left wrist is the manipelago. At the front in the pedestal a hole to confirm the attribute.

Immaculate Madonna, c.1710, Giacomo Antonio Ponsonelli, Italian, 1654-1735, 22 x 11 x 7 in. (55.88 x 27.94 x 17.78 cm), Marble, Italy, 18th century, Ponsonelli presents a vision of the Virgin Mary floating on clouds, one foot placed firmly on the crescent moon, the other on a dragon (symbol of the devil). The Immaculate Madonna was a popular subject with Baroque painters. Like other artists, Ponsonelli ramped up the drama by showing Marys clothes in tumultuous movement, her wind-whipped drapery a masterly rendering in marble. The foremost sculptor in Genoa in the early 1700s, Ponsonelli worked for patrons all over Europe, and his biographer notes that he even sent sculptures to Latin America.

Date: 11th century.A semidivine celestial musician to the gods is shown playing a flute, standing beneath the canopy of a flowering tree. This bracket figure was intended to decorate a pillar capital of the interior of a Hindu temple of the western Chalukyas. Temples of the southern Deccan favored the use of such figures of celestial musicians and dancers, poised at an angle between the capital of a pillar and the temple's interior ceiling stones to form a bridge between the worldly and heavenly spheres, and to make explicit the notion of the temple as a heavenly palace. The Tang Dynasty (June 18, 618 June 1, 907) was an imperial dynasty of China preceded by the Sui Dynasty and followed by the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period. It was founded by the Li family, who seized power during the decline and collapse of the Sui Empire. The dynasty was interrupted briefly by the Second Zhou Dynasty (October 8, 690 March 3, 705) when Empress Wu Zetian seized the throne, becoming the first and only Chinese empress regnant, ruling in her own right. Saints Christopher, Eustace, and Erasmus (Three Helper Saints) ca. 1500-1505 Tilman Riemenschneider German The figures in this relief represent three of the fourteen Helper Saints, venerated as a group since the early 1300s. They became particularly popular in the south of Germany after 1446, when it was believed they appeared in a vision to a shepherd in Upper Franconia. Represented here are Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child; Saint Eustace, a general in Trajans army who converted to Christianity; and Saint Erasmus, a Syrian bishop in episcopal regalia. The figures are carved from a single piece of limewood, with an added piece giving additional depth to Saint Christopher. The overlapping of figures allowed the three or four groups of saints to be joined with no apparent seam and also created a sense of great depth. The meticulous carving and small scale suggest that the original group was an independent relief in a niche or a shrine. Although Saint Christopher looks to the

Bishop Chess Piece. Culture: Scandinavian. Dimensions: Overall: 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 1 7/16 in. (9.6 x 6.3 x 3.6 cm). Date: 1150-1200.The Bishop was introduced to the European chessboard in the 12th century, replacing the elephant of Islamic tradition. The substitution of a man of the church for an animal used in battle may seem curious, but medieval bishops frequently served with armies. That role is not on display here: the smaller figures probably represent men who served the Bishop in ceremony. An official known as a Reader holds the Bishop's book. He has been tonsured--his hair shaven in a circle at the crown of his head. The man holding a staff and cradling his ear may be the Precentor, who was in charge of the choir. The style of the figures' polychromy, however, reveals that they were set into their wooden bodies in Ecuador. Artists there practiced a distinctive technique to embellish the garments of their sculptures, applying gold patterns over the colored backgrounds rather than scratching them through, as in true estofado.. Female Shaman ca. 1780-1800 Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, St. Petersburg Russian The Imperial Porcelain Manufactory entered a period of prosperity under the patronage of Catherine the Great. The factory mainly served the needs of the court and, at the order of the empress, created unique pieces to be given as gifts to foreign dignitaries, favorites, and courtiers.Beginning in 1779, the chief modeler at the factory, Jean-Dominique Rochette (1744-1809), extended the scope of production by creating a series of figures in porcelain (see also 1982.60.167). Rochette's workshop was responsible for the first series of figures known as the People of Russia. The series was inspired by the book of the famous ethnographer and traveler Johann Gottlieb Georgi entitled A Description of All the Peoples Inhabiting the Russian State. . The angel holds out an indefinable object in the hands (a fragment of). He has raised the right leg with the knee forward and wed the other with the foot. Behind the Nimbus the upper part of the other wing is visible. The angel is wearing underlets, of which only the sleeves and a part of the skirt through a split in the top dress (according to the colors) can be seen, a second dress with half sleeves and a collar. The sleeveless overshad is about this, which is around the means and hips. A part of this robe that swallows backwards by the band crossed over the chest; An indefinable appendix, the end of which can be seen at the swinging foot.

Angel second half 18th century Attributed to Lorenzo Mosca In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions.
