First Trieste Emigrants Leave For Australia -- The scene at the Trieste Quayside, thronged with relatives and friends waiting to wave goodbye to the first Trieste emigrants to leave for Australia. About 650 Emigrants Left Trieste a few days ago, aboard the liner S.S. Castelverde.They are the first of about 2,100 workers from Trieste and refugees from the Giulia region, who are leaving their country through a special agreement with the Australian authorities. From The Pacific To The Atlantic, On Its Side: A U.S. Navy dry-dock going through the Panama Canal.The United States Navy solved the difficult problem of transferring four floating dry-docks, each weighing 15,000 to 18,000 tons, by sending them through the Panama Canal, from the Pacific to the Atlantic, on their sides. Our photograph shows one of the dry-docks passing through the Pedro Miguel Locks at the beginning of its unusual journey through the Canal. The ends of the dock were removed, lashed together, and towed through the Canal to join the main hull previously transported to Cristobal. June 24, 1949.
