253 Ships Either Launched Or Begun In One Week As U.S. Celebrates Anniversary Of Liberty Ship -- A 10,000 ton cargo carrier slides down the ways at a U.S. East Coast shipyard during the anniversary week one year after the first Liberty Ship was launched. This ship, which will be transferred to the American South-African line, is one of 253 either launched or begun during the week. A total of more than 500 ships had been launched by the end of the first year, setting a mark that experts said more than assured completion of President Roosevelt's goal of 3,000,000 deadweight tons in U.S. shipyards during the year 1942. USS Wakefield (AP-21), Arrival at Dry Dock, Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts after Fire at Sea. This item is a photograph depicting the troop transport USS Wakefield (AP-21) in dry dock at Boston Navy Yard after sustaining severe fire damage at sea. Originally constructed as the ocean liner SS Manhattan, Wakefield was chartered for troop transport by the U.S. Government on June 6, 1941 and was commissioned as a naval transport ship on June 15, 1941. She operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres during World War II, participating in transport convoys and often acting as a "lone wolf," relying upon her superior speed to evade enemy submarines. A rapidly spreading fire that broke out deep within the bowels of the ship on the evening of September 3, 1942 necessitated her complete rebuild in Boston, after which she was recommissioned on February 10, 1944.
