Liberty Ship Sinks After Collision -- The Norwegian Vessel backing away from the Western Farmer after the collision. This vivid picture was made by radio officer Albert Marshall on board the Western Farmer. Twenty-four men and a dog, part of the crew of the 7,239-ton liberty ship "Western Farmer," which sank in halves after a collision in the English Channel, were landed at Ramsgate, England, today August 21, by Lifeboat. The remaining 13 members of the crew, taken off by lifeboat as the ship went down 18 miles off Ramsgate, came ashore at Dover, England. August 21, 1952. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).

The Normandie Floats Again: The U.S.S. Lafayette, formerly the French liner Normandie, is shown after her list had decreased to 36 degrees in the final stage of refloating the vessel. Once the world's biggest ship, the Lafayette burned and capsized at her New York City pier on Feb. 10, 1942, while being refitted for Service with the United States Navy. Salvagers seals the vessel's hull and stripped off the superstructure to lighten dock weight while she lay half-submerged in the Hudson River. In early August, 1943, workers started pumping water from the hull and she slowly swung upright. When completely righted, she will be refitted for sea duty. September 17, 1943.
