Sampler(Limar)

The entire Tipitaka Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism is set on 729 marble slabs, each with 80 to 100 lines of text, originally in gold ink, on both the obverse and the reverse sides. Each stone is three and a half feet wide, five feet tall and five inches thick and housed in a kyauksa gu or a small cave-like stupa. Kuthodaw Pagoda, literally meaning Royal Merit Pagoda, and formally titled Mahalawka Marazein, is a Buddhist temple and stupa located in Mandalay, central Burma. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill and was built during the reign of King Mindon (180878). The stupa itself, which is gilded above its terraces, is 57 m (188 ft) high, and is modelled after the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung-U near Bagan. In the grounds of the pagoda are 729 'kyauksa gu' or stone-inscription caves, each containing a marble slab inscribed on both sides with a page of text from the Tipitaka, the entire Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. (24.1 × 16.5 × 2.5 cm). When important individuals died during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), they were commemorated in lengthy epitaphs that were inscribed on durable surfaces for posterity. This set of fourteen plaques (we are showing only part of the set) records the biography and family history of a celebrated poet, Park Eun (1479-1504), and even includes examples of his verses. This is an unusually early example of the use of porcelain for preserving epitaphs. Prior to this period, epitaphs were carved into stone. British Isles Sketchbook Francis William Edmonds (American, 1806-1863). British Isles Sketchbook, 1841. Graphite on cream, moderately thick, slightly textured wove paper, 4 3/4 x 6 5/16 x 1/4 in. Francis William Edmonds used this sketchbook during his three-week journey through the British Isles, recording important monuments he encountered along the way in places such as Warwick, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Stratford-upon-Avon. In one of the most striking sketches, combining precise outlines and exacting details, Edmonds rendered the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles of Jedburgh Abbey, looming over the Scottish town. Shirt ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This shirt was made of a single length of closely woven linen fabric that was folded crosswise and sewn together along the selvages with gaps left near the fold for the arms. A hole was cut at the front for the head and the edges were finished with a rolled hem. At the back, the lower edge of the shirt was formed by the beam end of the fabric; at the front it was finished with a rolled hem. There are two woven repairs (see attached photographs), evidence that the shirt was used and valued by its owner.The shirt had been folded into a rectangular pad and used in the wrappings of a middle-aged man. The stains are from resins employed in the mummification process. A bundle of linen containing a similar shirt and a kilt (36.3.76) was found lying on top of the mummy. Shell fragment ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian Inscription in Luwian hieroglyphs: Urhilina, kingThis object belongs to a group of at least fifteen whole and fragmentary cup-shaped shell objects found in a storeroom near the main audience hall at Fort Shalmaneser in Nimrud. All were inscribed in the Luwian language, used by the Hittite kings of the Late Bronze Age (1600-1200 B.C.) and their Iron Age descendants in eastern Turkey and northern Syria. Luwian was written in a hieroglyphic script, using stylized images to represent words and syllables. The inscription gives the name of Urhilina, king of the city-state of Hama who was defeated around 850 B.C. by the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III. The inscribed shells may have come to Nimrud at this time, as part of the booty carried off by the Assyrians from Hama. Their purpose is mysterious. The album contains 24 brown paper sheets with a total of 148 photos, a newspaper clipping and a theater program. Textile Fragment with Inscription ca. 934-40 This textile fragment of uneven shape is decorated with tapestry-woven inscriptions and floral patterns on an undyed linen ground. An Arabic inscription in kufic script that includes the name of the caliph, Al-Radi (r. 934-40), runs across the piece at the center with a mirror image of the same inscription directly below it. This fragment is likely from the same textile as fragment 29.179.5a. They were either produced in private workshops or in workshops belonging to the caliph where fabrics were woven exclusively as gifts or for the royal household and members of the court.. Ostracon New Kingdom ca. 1550-1070 B.C. Ostraca (plural for ostracon) are potsherds used as surfaces on which to write or draw. The term is used, by extension, to refer to chips of limestone, which were employed for similar purposes. Despite their humble appearances, ostraca bear a wide range of images and texts, including administrative documents, literary texts, and depictions of royal and divine figures. The texts were mostly written with reed pen and ink of two colors, red and black, and inscribed in Hieratic, the cursive script of ancient Egypt throughout most of its periods.
