This corset by Dr. Warner's includes cords rather than the traditional bones to give structure, straps for extra support and aeration holes over the fully covered bust. Dinner vest 1850-59 American Waistcoats and vests of the 18th and 19th centuries served as a layer protection and ornamentation during a period in fashion when the coat was intended to be left open in the front. The color was often chosen to complement the suit and covered in imaginative embroideries, heavily woven patterns or shiny satins made to draw the eye. Bodice for an altar figure. Culture: Spanish. Dimensions: Length at CB: 7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm). Date: 1730-70.This dress and bodice (2009.300.2329) are particularly miniature examples of garments for liturgical effigies. They were created for figures of the Virgin and Child as indicated by the letters on the front and were presumably shown together as they match in every detail. Beautifully constructed, their fine detailing includes applied metallic cord at the hem and piping at neck and waist. The bodice would have been accompanied by a skirt, which is now lost. Coat 1790s French This young mans tailcoat, with its high turned-down collar, narrow back, and wide lapels, exemplifies the exaggerated silhouette fashionable in post-revolutionary France. Striped textiles, modish from the 1760s, were ubiquitous in the dress of both sexes by the end of the century. In menswear, stripes served as a decorative substitute for the ornate, polychrome embroidery of earlier suits. The trend reflects the influence of Orientalism and neoclassical taste; in earlier centuries, stripes had pejorative connotations in the West and were associated with the clothing of socially marginalized groups..
