This 1917 illustration shows Wallace taken to London in Chains. Sir William Wallace promoted active resistance to the rule of King Edward I in Scotland after Edward forced the abdication and usurpation of the crown of John Balliol. Following defeat at the Battle of Falkirk on July 22, 1298, Wallace went toFrance where he attempted to gain French support for rebellion in Scotland but the effort proved ultimately futileand Wallace, back in Britain but refusing to submit to English rule, remained on the run. Siege of Gerona (Girona) (27 June to 10 September 1285). Acommplished by the French during the Crusade called by Pope Martin IV (1220-1285) against the Crown of Aragon, whose king was Peter III the Great (1240-1285), in retribution of his intervention in Sicily. Girona was defended by Ramon Folch VI of Cardona (1259-1320). As he did not receive reinforcements from King Peter III to break the siege, he had to surrender. The town was taken by Eustache Beaumarchais (ca. 1235-1294). After signing the capitulation, the troops of Ramon Folch VI of Cardona evacuated the city. Engraving. Sri Lanka had always been an important port and trading post in the ancient world, and was increasingly frequented by merchant ships from the Middle East, Persia, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. The islands were known to the first European explorers of South Asia and settled by many groups of Arab and Malay merchants. A Portuguese colonial mission arrived on the island in 1505 headed by Lourenco de Almeida, the son of Francisco de Almeida. At that point the island consisted of three kingdoms, namely Kandy in the central hills, Kotte at the Western coast, and Yarlpanam (Anglicised Jaffna) in the north. The Dutch arrived in the 17th century. The British East India Company took over the coastal regions controlled by the Dutch in 1796, and in 1802 these provinces were declared a crown colony under direct rule of the British government, therefore the island was not part of the British Raj. The Black Flag Army (Chinese: Heiqi Jun) was a remnant of a bandit group who may have been former Taiping rebels that crossed the border from Guangxi province of China into Upper Tonkin, in the Empire of Annam (Vietnam) in 1865. They became known mainly for their fights against French forces in cooperation with both Vietnamese and Chinese authorities. The Black Flag Army is so named because of the preference of its commander, Liu Yongfu, for using black command flags.

World War I - British troops adavance on German African soldiers during the Battle of Loos was the largest British offensive mounted on the Western Front in 1915 during World War I. The first British use of poison gas occurred and the battle was the first mass engagement of New Army units. Prior to the British attack, about 140 long tons of chlorine gas was released, with mixed success; in places the gas was blown back onto British trenches. Due to the inefficiency of the contemporary gas masks, many soldiers removed them as they could not see through the fogged-up talc eyepieces or could barely breathe with them on.
