Dish with arms of the Visconti family ca. 1480-1500 Italian, probably Deruta Here, a dragon-headed creature devours a somewhat complacent-looking boy. This startling image, known as the biscione (big serpent), was a heraldic symbol of the ruling family of the duchy of Milan. Filling much of the dishs central well, it is surrounded by an irregular border of peacock feathers. Square Tile late 12th-early 13th century This tile belongs to a unique group of monochrome glazed, molded relief tiles excavated from a palace at Ghazni, in modern Afghanistan. The decoration on this group consists of animals in heraldic poses (as seen here), as well as vegetal scrolls and calligraphy, often surrounded by beaded borders. The excavation stratigraphy dates them to the early thirteenth century, the period of the citys Ghurid rule. They were probably manufactured in Ghazni especially for the palace.. Square Tile 452769

Snake jug, c. 1865, Anna Pottery, Anna, Illinois, 1859-1894, 12 1/2 x 8 5/16 x 8 11/16 in. (31.75 x 21.11 x 22.07 cm), Stoneware with painted decoration, 19th century, Cornwall and Wallace Kirkpatrick, brothers who owned the Anna Pottery in Anna, Illinois, made a name for themselves with their bizarre wares, especially jugs with realistic writhing snakes. Here, a scene from the Civil War (1861-65) shows Union soldiers attempting to catch Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, who flees them disguised as a woman. The dark spots on the snakes heads identify them as copperheads—a moniker for Northerners sympathetic to the Confederate cause. The Kirkpatricks pulled these and other characters straight out of the caustic but hilarious cartoons published in Northern-leaning newspapers, expressing their own opinions in pottery that was pertinent to current politics.

Cow plaque ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This metal plaque depicts a cow with a sundisk between its horns, which is a common representation of the goddess Hathor. It was excavated at Deir el-Bahari, close to a shrine for this goddess. Most likely the plaque had been deposited at this shrine, as a donation to the deity.　There are two elongated loops on the back of the plaque: one is in the center of the cows back, and the other is on the baseline. These were probably used for stringing this plaque together with a series of similar small pieces.. Cow plaque 547587

Four-Cornered Hat A.D. 500-900 Wari Finely woven, brightly colored hats, customarily featuring a square crown, four sides, and four pointed tips, are most frequently associated with two ancient cultures of the Andes: the Wari and the Tiwanaku. The Wari Empire dominated the south-central highlands and the west coastal regions of what is now Peru from 500-1000 A.D. The Tiwanaku occupied the altiplano (high plain) directly south of Wari-populated areas around the same time, including territory now part of the modern country of Bolivia. The cultures not only developed and flourished as contemporaries, but also occupied adjacent lands for nearly four centuries. A Wari ceremonial center called Cerro Baúl was located a mere five miles from Tiwanaku-settled fields in the Moquegua Valley of Peru. The two cultures likely encountered each other at Cerro Baúl and elsewhere, but the nature of these interactions remains largely unknown.
