Design for a fan 18th century Anonymous, Austrian, 18th century Austrian An unusual but rich source for information on gardens, this eighteenth-century fan is as delightful an object to view today as it must have been for its original owner. In a witty way, the fan displays the various entertainments offered in what looks like the prototype of an amusement park, possibly the Prater in Vienna, famous for such public entertainment. The activities one could choose from are shown in all their detail: here couples try shooting targets, there ladies swing high up in a flimsily constructed forerunner of the Ferris wheel, propelled by hand. Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Pyramid of Caius Cestius 1547 Anonymous This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints. Instead, clients comp

Forts Zeelandia and Provintia and the City of Tainan 19th century Unidentified artist This pictorial map depicts the Taiwanese coastal town of Tainan, where the Dutch built two forts around 1624, remnants of which still survive today. In addition to showcasing the European-style forts with their distinctive masonry architecture, the painting records a wealth of other details, including Chinese-style walled towns, farmhouses on stilts, and numerous vignettes of dailym life featuring both people in Chinese dress and half-naked indigenous people.Several versions of this compositionall painted on deerskinare extant. Although each of the versions is somewhat different, the use of stamps or stencils to reproduce many of the pictorial elements suggests that, like Chinese painted wallpapers, it was created in a workshop for the Western market. While a precise date for the map's creation is difficult to pinpoint, the absence of foreign ships or figures indicates that the composition postdates
