The Seasons, 1643-1644. Wenceslaus Hollar (Bohemian, 1607-1677). Etching; Increments of time, such as the seasons, were one of the most popular subjects for printed sets. Wenceslaus Hollar alone made six different versions. Hollar was a professional printmaker with over 3,000 prints to his credit. Born in Bohemia, he worked in Germany, London, and Antwerp. He came to London in 1636 while in the employ of the Earl of Arundel, an important collector that Hollar met in Germany. Apparently free to pursue independent projects, Hollar designed and etched this series around 1643-44. Here, each season is personified by elegantly clad ladies, appropriately dressed for their particular climate, with recognizable landmarks in and around London in the backgrounds. The inscriptions, in an older version of English, are slightly suggestive, in keeping with the lighthearted character of the imagery. Apollo, plate 20 from Apollo and the Muses 1460-1470 Italy. These engravings, part of a ìdeckî of 50 images that resemble playing cards, were probably created in Ferrara. The enigmatic series is organized into five thematic groups Conditions of Man, Apollo and the Muses, Arts and Sciences, Geniuses and Virtues, and Firmaments of the Universe. Not intended as tarot or playing cards, these tarocchi were most likely used as a didactic iconographical source or model book. Young Man with a Skull 1514-1524 Netherlands. Once interpreted as Lucas van Leydenís self-portrait, this print is sometimes entitled Memento Mori (Remember you must die). The well-dressed, anonymous figure considers his mortality while pointing at the human skull (which may or may not be real) tucked under his cloak. This image predates by eighty years Shakespeareís Hamlet, with his famous speech on poor Yorickís fate, traditionally delivered with the jesterís actual skull in hand. If the round D¸rer Crucifixion (1956.951) was printed from Emperor Maximilianís hatpin, which was also made in 1519, it would have resembled the tiny face stylishly worn on the cap of this unidentified man..
