The Hudson River Portfolio 1821-25 After William Guy Wall Irish This bound set of hand-colored aquatints presents views along two hundred plus miles of the Hudson River, descending from Lake Luzerne in the foothills of the Adirondacks, to New York City. Enhanced by John Agg's text, the prints are considered amongst the finest produced in 19th-century America. In the summer of 1820, Irish-born William Guy Wall traveled down the Hudson to sketch potential subjects, then made watercolors to be engraved. John Rubens Smith was hired to produce the related aquatints, but soon was replaced by John Hill (both men had moved to the United States from London, with Hill proving the more skilled and experienced). Between 1821 and 1825, Hill reworked four plates begun by Smith, then produced sixteen more. After the prints were hand-colored, subscribers received them in sets of four (irregular numbering resulted as twenty-four planned subjects were reduced to twenty during publication; and the number

Foundry at Canon, Herefordshire 1792 John Baptist Malchair British When he made this atmospheric study of a working foundry during a trip to Herefordshire in July 1792, John Baptist Malchair carefully inscribed the location, date, and time on the back. The drawing appears to have been made at Canon Bridge, a village close to the Welsh border. Bold watercolor washes were applied over sketched graphite lines, to capture the effects of smoke and fire belching from a furnace against a night sky, together with buildings reflected in a bordering river. The artist shared his interest in the impact of the industrial revolution upon the English landscape with contemporaries such as Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797). Born in Cologne, Malchair had moved to Oxford in 1759 to work as a musician and drawing master. In the latter capacity, he encouraged his students to sketch from nature.
