Bristol PilotThe Bristol Channel opens between Hartland Point in the South and St. Ann's Head on the north, 48 miles away.It is a nasty sheet of water to navigate in the best of conditions. It is probable that there are worse waterways in the world, but, if so, they are little frequented by ships. To navigate the sip on this water one man must always be aboard. That man is the pilot.The Bristol Pilots are an ancient body. It is not known when first they went forth the bring in the ships, but it must have been many centuries ago.Today the pilots are a Limited Company owning their two steam and two motor cutters. It was reported this afternoon May 20 that there are now between 30 and 40 Russian ships in the English channel. Seventh of them are anchored off Falmouth, and others are making their way towards the helford river.
