Members of the Palace household and wives of employees of the Royal Mews assembled in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth's Sewing Bee, held twice a week during World War II in order to produce garments and surgical dressings for the Red Cross. The women can be seen sat at trestle tables in what is one of the most beautiful of the State apartments in Buckingham Palace, and was originally Queen Victoria's ballroom. Date: 1939

Sir, What a thrill to see my photo on the front page of The National Times (May 30-Jun 5).As you probably know, although not many of your readers would, it was taken at the Women's Hospital in Carbon, Victoria, and published in The Herald in Melbourne to show the record number of babies, 36, born there in 24 hours.It wasn't quite 1946 but that doesn't revived some memories of training.I wonder if you have heard from any of the others in the photoI am in the front on the right end of the row.
