The Life Class of the Vienna Academy. Artist: Johann Jacobe (Austrian, Vienna 1733-1797 Vienna); After Martin Ferdinand Quadal (Austrian, 1736-1811). Dimensions: sheet: 25 1/2 x 31 3/8 in. (64.7 x 79.7 cm). Date: 1790.Members of the Vienna Academy are represented sketching, painting, and sculpting from a live model. Quadal, who specialized in portraits and animal subjects, sits sketching in the right foreground. Jacobé taught mezzotint--an intaglio technique in which subtle gradations of light and shade form the image--at the Vienna Academy. Thanks to his professorship, Vienna produced the only significant school of mezzotint artists in the late eighteenth century outside of London. This impression is a proof, a step in the working process, and the names of the artists had yet to be engraved on the plate. They were added by hand in brown ink in the bottom margin. Irish Stew: Not All Hot - Rather Too Much So ca. 1840 Mssrs. Fores This political satire published by Fores comments on political responses to the Irish Potato Famine. A man standing at left with a spoon (probably William Lamb, Viscount Melbourne, prime minister 1834-41) says "That's the Irish fashion, its reckoned an amendment," while others seated at a table near a huge basin labeled "Irish Stew à la Normande" say "The Taters want skinned and the Peel has nearly choked me," "There don't seem to be enough Lambs Head in it or it would be more palatable," and "This will nearly settle our Hash its so scalding hot." Sir Robert Peel was the leader of the Conservative Party in Parliament and became prime minister in 1841, and the dialogue references the rivalry between Peel and Melbourne (Lamb).. The Syndics 1876 Léopold Flameng Flameng was among the last generation of highly-skilled reproductiveor interpretive, as they preferred to be calledprintmakers in nineteenth-century France, before photography fully subsumed this practice. He and a small group of devoted etchers considered themselves to be Rembrandt’s successors in their use of the medium. Flameng exhibited this etching after Rembrandt’s The Syndics, 1662 (Rijksmuseum) alongside his interpretation of The Anatomy Lesson, 1632 (Mauritshuis) at the Salon of 1876.. The Syndics.
