Bomb Crater in Berg. Close-up of a petroleum incendiary bomb crater in an iceberg 450 ft. long, 150 ft. high above water off Virgin Rocks, Grand Bands region, taken from a Coast Guard plane on an ice observation flight out of Argentia. The bomb crater is shown here after it ceased burning with long trails of smoke and great flames. Lines in berg are clear blue ice (or fresh water ice) which is distinctive from the opaque white ice of which berg mainly composed.

Arrowhead ca. 1st century B.C.-3rd century A.D. Parthian This bronze arrowhead is shaped like a leaf. It has a long tang and is bent, presumably from use. It was discovered on the surface at Shahr-i Qumis in northern Iran, which has been identified as the ancient city of Hecatompylos, established by the Parthians as their capital by about 200 B.C. In Greek Hecatompylos means a hundred gates,’ suggesting that the city was quite large. Indeed, the modern archaeological site includes several mounds, only a few of which have been excavated, and a vast area covered with potsherds. The Parthians were famed in antiquity as archers, and gave their name to the Parthian shot,’ a tactic in which a mounted archer rides away from his enemy while firing arrows at him.. P-21742 C Range 6 million kilometers (3.72 million miles) This Voyager 2 image shows the region of Jupiter extending from the equator to the southern polar latitudes in the neighborhood of the Great Red Spot. A white oval, different from the one observed in a similiar position at the time of the Voyager 1 encounter, is situated south of the Great Red Spot. The region of white clouds now extends from east of the red spot and around its northern boundary, preventing small cloud vortices from circling the feature. The disturbed region west of the red spot has also changed since the equivalent Voyager 1 image. It shows more small scale structure and cloud vortices being formed out of the wave structures.

Range 72.3 million km. ( 44.9 million miles ) P-29314B/W This Voyager 2 photograph of Uranus shows the planets outermost, or epsilon, ring. This is a computerized summation of six images shot by the narrow angle camera. It is the first photo to show the epsilon ring unblurred by Earth's atmosphere. The Epsilon ring, some 51,200 km. ( 31,800 miles ) from the planets center, is the most prominent of Uranus' nine known rings. Ground based observations of stellar occulations by the rings have determined that the Epsilon ring is eccentric, or elliptical, with its widest portion about 100 km. ( 60 miles ) wide and its narrowest portion about 20 km. (12 miles ). Estimates of the rings brightness suggest that it is also very dark, with a reflectance of only 1 or 2 percent and a probable composition of carbonaceous material similiar to that on dark asteroids and the dark side of Saturn's moon Lapetus. Because the ring is so narrow and dark, at this range, the Voyager camera could not resolve ev

This unigue geometry, the highest phase angle at which Voyager imaged the rings, allows us to see lanes of fine dust particles not visible from other viewing angles. All the previously known rings are visible. However, some of the brightest features in the image are bright dust lanes not previously seen. the combination of this unique geometry and a long, 96 second exposure allowed this spectacular observation, acquired through the clear filter if Voyager 2's wide angle camera. the long exposure produced a noticable, non-uniform smear, as well as streaks due to trailed stars.

Full Moon Made 1850-1874 United States. Stereographs were made by taking two photographs of the same scene with lenses about two and a half inches apart to match the distance between human eyes; viewed through a stereoscope, the images combine to give the illusion of depth. Enormously popular from around 1850 to 1930, stereographs documented disasters, expeditions, monuments, and exotic locations by the millions. Nathan Pease, based in New Hampshire, was one of many photographers who ran a brisk trade in stereographic landscapes for tourists and armchair travelers. This stereo image of a full moon was made in an unusual way because of the distance to the subject, the two standard lenses on a stereographic camera would not be able to render a binocular effect. Instead, the photographer made two images at different times, so that the moon would be in a different orbital location.. Albumen print, stereo . N. W. Pease

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a natural bacteria found all over the Earth, has a fairly novel way of getting rid of unwanted insects. Bt forms a protein substance (shown on the right) that is not harmful to humans, birds, fish or other vertebrates. When eaten by insect larvae the protein causes a fatal loss of appetite. For over 25 years agricultural chemical companies have relied heavily upon safe Bt pesticides. New space based research promises to give the insecticide a new dimension in effectiveness and applicability. Researchers from the Consortium for Materials Development in Space along with industrial affiliates such as Abott Labs and Pern State University flew Bt on a Space Shuttle mission in the fall of 1996. Researchers expect that the Shuttle's microgravity environment will reveal new information about the protein that will make it more effective against a wider variety of pests.
