Watercolour with pen and ink of a Manipuri horseman (Kathe). The horseman in this portrait came from Manipur in the northeast of India and was known by the Burmese as Kathé. In 1826, Manipur became a state within the British Raj. Colesworthy Grant was unimpressed with the Burmese cavalry. He wrote that 'If the Infantry of the Burmese army disappointed expectation, the mounted portion yet more.for although there were many beautifully formed, powerful, and spirited horses, very many more were of sorry appearance, as though of inferior blood, or badly fed. The men, believed to be principally or exclusively Munnipooreans, were strong enough looking, but miserably set off by their dress and equipments. Their clothes were of the same coarse quality as those of the foot soldiers, and their arms consisted of a short spear, and the customary sword slung at their backs'.

Field Armor ca. 1525; left arm defense, 19th century; rondels, 1923 German, Nuremberg This fluted armor is typical of the battle dress of the knightly cavalry of southern Germany and Austria in the 1520s. It is composed of elements from at least three different but very similar armors, all made in Nuremberg when fluted armor was at its peak of fashion. The armor is stamped on the pauldrons (shoulder defenses) with the mark of the city of Nuremberg, on the helmet with the letter N in a pearly circle, on the cuisses (thigh defenses) with a Gothic N, and on the right gauntlet with an indistinct maker's mark. From the time China was brought under the rule of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1683), the banner soldiers became more professional and bureaucratised. Once the Manchus took over governing, they could no longer satisfy the material needs of soldiers by garnishing and distributing booty; instead, a salary system was instituted, ranks standardised, and the Bannermen became a sort of hereditary military caste, though with a strong ethnic inflection. Banner soldiers took up permanent positions, either as defenders of the capital, Beijing, where roughly half of them lived with their families, or in the provinces, where 18 garrisons were established. The largest banner garrisons throughout most of the Qing dynasty were at Beijing, followed by Xi'an and Hangzhou. Sizable banner populations were also placed in Manchuria and at strategic points along the Great Wall, the Yangtze River and Grand Can

Yamamoto Kansuke (1501 October 18, 1561) was a Japanese samurai of the 16th century who was one of Takeda Shingen's most trusted Twenty-Four Generals. Also known by his formal name, Haruyuki, he was a brilliant strategist, and is particularly known for his plan which led to victory in the fourth battle of Kawanakajima against Uesugi Kenshin. However, Kansuke never lived to see his plan succeed; thinking it to have failed, he charged headlong into the enemy ranks, dying in battle. Ueno Hikoma (野彦馬, October 15, 1838 - May 22, 1904) was a pioneer Japanese photographer, born in Nagasaki. He is noted for his fine portraits, often of important Japanese and foreign figures, and for his excellent landscapes, particularly of Nagasaki and its surroundings. Ueno was a major figure in nineteenth-century Japanese photography as a commercially and artistically successful photographer and as an instructor.

Armor (Gusoku) 18th century Helmet signed by Bamen Tomotsugu Japanese With Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) winning the decisive Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and unifying all the local warlords under his rule, Japan returned, after a century of military conflicts, to peace and stability. This entailed, however, a significant decrease in the production of arms and armor, and by the end of the seventeenth century only higher ranking Samurai, e.g., Daimy (feudal lords), were able to afford new, custom made suits of armor.Accordingly, only few lineages of armorers survived. The Bamen School was one of them, tracing its origins to the turbulent late sixteenth century. Legend has it that some of their masters produced excellent shaffrons (Japanese: bamen) whereupon their employer, the Honda clan, allowed them to use the term as the name for their school. Tomotsugu, the maker of this armor, was active at the turn of the eighteenth century and the last great master of the Bamen School. The helmet

Face Defense of Mail 15th century German From about the third century B.C. through the early fourteenth century A.D., mail, also called chain mail, was the predominant and most effective type of body armor known in Europe. From about the mid-fifteenth century onward, mail was used in conjunction with full plate armor to fill the gaps between plates. Separate mail sleeves were made to be worn with a cuirass (breastplate and backplate); shaped panels of mail called gussets, covered the armpits or the crooks of the elbows and were attached to arming jackets, garments specially tailored to be worn under armor; and mail breeches, called brayettes or pairs of paunces, could be worn by men fighting on foot..
