Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. What The Airstream Does To Pilot's Face -- Navy tests of human endurance produced this sequence of pictures showing the effect air blasts up to 325 miles per hour on a man's face. The subject, his eyes protected by a mask, sat in a wind tunnel as an airstream of gradually increasing velocity moved at him, simulating conditions a pilot bailing out of a plane moving at high speed would encounter. He was given no warning when the blast was coming. Sequence(left to right, top and bottom) shows the skin of his cheeks and neck affected first, with his mouth distorted gradually as the air speed moved up to 325mph. The Polish Air Force in Britain during the Second World War Since the collapse of France and her treaty with Germany, various air units of other Allied countries fighting with the French Air Force, have made their way to Britain. Most of the Polish squadrons are now flying with the RAF, and those not included in operational units are under training in various parts of England. While living in Mexico City, Guevara met Raúl and Fidel Castro, joined their 26th of July Movement, and sailed to Cuba aboard the yacht, Granma, with the intention of overthrowing U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Guevara soon rose to prominence among the insurgents, was promoted to second-in-command, and played a pivotal role in the victorious two year guerrilla campaign that deposed the Batista regime. Following the Cuban Revolution, Guevara performed a number of key roles in the new government. These included reviewing the appeals and firing squads for those convicted as war criminals during the revolutionary tribunals, instituting agrarian reform as minister of industries, helping spearhead a successful nationwide literacy campaign, serving as both national bank president and instructional director for Cubas armed forces, and traversing the globe as a diplomat on behalf of Cuban socialism.
