Mexican American War. Battle of Churubusco, August 20, 1847. During the US Army's approach to Mexico City, they invaded through rough land south of the city. The battles cost the Mexican force 3,000 casualties to wounds and disease. Upon surrender, 72 Irish-American men of the San Patricios Battalion, were court-marshaled by the United States Army as deserters, of whom 50 were executed (BSLOC_2019_8_49)

French illustration of the Battle of Solferino (referred to in Italy as the Battle of Solferino and San Martino) on 24 June 1859 resulted in the victory of the allied French Army under Napoleon III and Sardinian Army under Victor Emmanuel II (together known as the Franco-Sardinian Alliance) against the Austrian Army under Emperor Franz Joseph I. It was the last major battle in world history where all the armies were under the personal command of their monarchs.

Scene from the life of Bertrand du Guesclin, (19th century). Bertrand as a child, fighting with others. Bertrand du Guesclin (c1320-1380) entered the service of Charles of Blois, Duke of Brittany, fighting against the invading English. He was knighted in 1354 and later served King Charles V of France who made him Lieutenant of Normandy and Count of Longueville. At the Battle of Auray (1364), du Guesclin was ransomed after being taken prisoner by the English, and led mercenaries into Spain where he fought for Henry of Trastamara against his half-brother, Peter the Cruel of Castile. Du Guesclin won the throne of Castile and Leon for Henry, who became King Henry II. In 1370, Du Guesclin was made Constable of France by Charles V, and worked to drive the English out of France until his death.
