The Umbrella Man - General Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the order making shape operational, at the shape he headquarters in Paris today, April 2. Addressing a press conference afterwards General Eisenhower said "I am here just to help provide an umbrella over it (the North Atlantic treaty countries) all." The press conference was the first he has given since taking over command formally at one minute past midnight today.Eisenhower said that taking over command was simply a formal in keeping with the old military tradition that a new commander should issue a number one order announcing that he had taken command. Police Band and Choir at the Town Hall tomorrow night.The musical director of the Police Band is Captain J. Crosby-Browne, senior military bandmaster of N.S.W., and a member of the teaching staff of the Conservatorium. Invasion Camera Goes for $8,500,000 In War Bonds. Captain Ellis Reed-Hill, Chief, Public Relations Division, U.S. Coast Guard, holds the camera with which Coast Guard Combat Photograph S. Scott Wigle, of Detroit, Michigan, made the first D Day invasion picture sent by radio from London to America. The camera was knocked down for a record $8,500,000 War Bond purchase by the Community Savings Bank of Rochester, N.Y. in the coast-to-coast War Bond auction conducted over the Mutual radio network. Bids totalled more than $12,000,000. Prints of the Wigle photograph, showing LCI's headed across the channel under barrage balloons, were presented to all who bought extra bond and stamps through Victory Auction Broadcast.
