Historical Military Portraits

Sergeant Johnny Clem in 1863, after the Battle of Chickamauga. In 1861, he was too young to join the 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, but attached himself to the unit anyway, and was eventually allowed to enlist as a drummer boy in May 1863. At age 12, while in the Battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 1863, he shot a Confederate colonel who had demanded his surrender. He was promoted to sergeant, becoming the youngest noncommissioned officer in US Army history (BSLOC_2018_9_49)

Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) propaganda poster in Nicaragua. The party was named after Augusto CA©sar Sandino, who led the Nicaraguan resistance against the United States occupation of Nicaragua in the 1930s. The FSLN overthrew Anastasio Somoza in 1979, ending the Somoza dynasty, and established a revolutionary government in its place. Following their seizure of power, the Sandinistas ruled Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990, first as part of a Junta of National Reconstruction.

A rather sickening and defeatist (or perhaps tongue-in-cheek) item, suggesting what might happen if Germany wins the First World War. Just as Napoleon placed his family members on various European thrones, so Wilhelm II might appoint his sons to different countries. Date: 1914

The Aceh War, also known as the Dutch War or the Infidel War (1873-1914), was an armed military conflict between the Sultanate of Aceh and the Netherlands which was triggered by discussions between representatives of Aceh and the United Kingdom in Singapore during early 1873. The war was part of a series of conflicts in the late 19th century that consolidated Dutch rule over modern-day Indonesia.
