Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.

Flight Lieutenant R H A Lee and Flying Officer K H Blair, after being decorated by King George VI at RAF Hornchurch, Essex, 27 June 1940. Flight-Lieutenant R H A Lee, after being awarded the DSO and DFC, and Flying Officer K H Blair, after being awarded the DFC, by King George VI at RAF Hornchurch, Essex. The awards were given for their distinguished service as fighter pilots with No. 85 Squadron RAF in France. Lee, a flight commander with the Squadron, was posted missing in action on 18 August 1940, having destroyed at least 9 enemy aircraft. Blair flew with No. 151 Squadron RAF during the Battle of Britain, and later converted to night fighters. He finished the war commanding No. 613 Squadron RAF, having brought his victory score to 12.

Admittedly he doesn't tower over his father, police Inspector Albert Martin, but then, father is no dwarf. In fact he is 6ft. 5ins. tall. August 26, 1953.

Royal Air Force Operations in the Middle East and North Africa, 1939-1943 Major J E 'Jack' Frost, Commanding Officer of No. 5 Squadron SAAF sits between two of his most experienced pilots, Lieutenant R Pare (left) and Captain A Duncan, at LG 121, Egypt. 'Jack' Frost joined No. 3 Squadron SAAF as a flight commander in 1940, having been a member of the South African Permanent Force for five years. He saw considerable action in Somaliland and Ethiopia, scoring a number of victories over Italian aircraft, before he was evacuated in May 1941 with acute appendicitis. On his recovery he was appointed to command 5 Squadron, leading them to Egypt in early 1942 and through the heavy air fighting during the Battle of Gazala in May and June. Although Frost was posted to the staff of No. 233 Wing on 31 May, he resumed command the Squadron when his successor, Major Duncan, was killed that same day. He in turn was shot down and killed over El Adem by German fighters on 16 June. He was an outstanding

Coast Guard Seaman Proves "Tongue is Mightier Than The Sword". Photograph of Coast Guardsman George Haboush..Though he helped man landing boats under heavy fire and had his ship torpedoed beneath him, George Haboush, 22, of 5117 Seventeenth Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, Seaman First Class in the United States Coast Guard, proved most valuable in the North African invasion through his knowledge of the Arabic language. When seriously wounded natives were brought aboard ship for treatment, they believed themselves prisoners and refused to allow the authorities to help them until Haboush made friends with them and explained that Americans were their friends and wanted to help them.

Cleveland Coast Guardsman Covers War in the Atlantic. Serving aboard a Coast Guard-manned troop transport in the Atlantic, Coast Guardsman Don E. Jordan, Specialist First Class, is recording with typewriter and camera stirring war action. He formerly was a resident of Detroit, Mich., where his parents live at 4683 Vancouver Street, and of Cleveland, Ohio, where his wife, Frances, lives at 2038 Cornell Road. Before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard, he was in the advertising business in Detroit and the newspaper business in Cleveland.

What the Well-Foliaged Coast Guardsman is Wearing or Beavered Beauties of the South Pacific (No. 3 in a series of 5). The Buccaneer Type--With modern refinements, there's still a bit of the swashbuckler left in the young men of America who sail the seas today. They still love to adorn their chins with whiskers and they're still eager to come to grips with the enemy. The beards have a nostalgic, familiar touch, even though the foe is now the Jap. Coast Guardsman Anthony N. Adamik, Seaman, First Class, for example, is serving aboard a Coast Guard-manned LST in the South Pacific, heading ever nearer the Jap homeland. For the adornment of his face he favors the "Buccaneer Type" of beaver, scraggly on the chin and tended on the lip. Adamik calls 245 Lincoln Avenue, North Vandegrift, PA., his home. Local Coast Guard Combat Photog on Cutter. Typical of Coast Guard Combat Photographers "shooting" battle scenes on the far-flung fronts is Coast Guardsman John E. Young, Photographer's Mate, first class, of 690 Grove Street, Newton Lower Falls, Mass., who is serving aboard a Coast Guard Combat Cutter. Young was part of the now famous Coast Guard Commando party which wrecked two Nazi radio-weather stations, captured a German armed trawler, forced the scuttling of another and took 60 German prisoners-of-war in a series of actions amid Greenland ice floes recently. His mother lives at RFD 1, Seminole, Okla.

When he was captured Noel was with the USA 10th Corps Marines, covering the fighting retreat of the United Nations forces trapped in the Changjin reservoir sector for Associated Press Photo subscribers.
