Gerald Graham (1831-1899) English army officer who served in the Royal Engineers. At the age of 23 he won the Victoria Cross during the Crimean Russo-Turkish War 1853-1856 for an act of bravery at Sebastopol on 18 June 1855. He continued to have a distinguished career and retired at Lieutenant-General. Cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne in the Punch's Fancy Portraits series from 'Punch' (London, 22 March 1884).

Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), one of the most striking figures in the early days of the U.S. Navy. The destruction of the Philadelphia at Tripoli and the capture of H.M.S. Macedonian were two of his finest feats. He was unfortunately killed in a duel with another U.S. naval officer in 1820.

Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842-1885) English traveller and soldier born at Bedford. In the winter of 1875-1876 he rode through Russian Asia to the Khanate of Kiva. In 1882 he crossed the English Channel in a hot air balloon. Killed at the Battle of Abu Klea when part of the relief force hoping to save Gordon at Khartoum.
