S73-33164 (27 Aug. 1973) --- A close-up view of Anita, one of the two common cross spiders Araneus diadematus” aboard Skylab, is seen in this photographic reproduction of a color television transmission made by a TV camera aboard the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. A finger of one of the Skylab 3 crewmen points to Anita. The two spiders are housed in an enclosure onto which a motion picture and still camera are attached to record the spider’s attempt to build a web in the zero-gravity of space. The spider experiment (ED52) is one of 25 experiments selected by NASA for Skylab from more than 3,400 experiment proposals submitted by high school students throughout the nation. ED52 was submitted by 17-year old Judith S. Miles of Lexington, Mass.

Stratosphere Balloon Destroyed by Fire -- Remarkable picture taken just after the balloon had caught fire.Professor Piccard's balloon, in which he was about he make an attempt to rise to the stratosphere by hot air, caught fire while being heated today and was entirely destroyed. S69-60294 (26 Nov. 1969) --- One of the first views of the Apollo 12 lunar rocks is this photograph of the open sample return container. The large rock is approximately 7 1/2 inches across and is larger than any rock brought back to Earth by the crew of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. Two of the rocks in the first container are crystalline and generally lighter in color than those returned on the first lunar landing. The rocks in this box are medium charcoal brown/gray in color.

"As mentioned previously, Langley is conducting in-house and contract studies of extra-vehicular activities wherein zero gravity is simulated by the water-immersion technique. ... Water immersion is a very useful technique where motions are slow. When more rapid motion is required, as in studying one-man propulsion systems, other approaches are required. For these studies Langley has been using the RDS Rendezvous Docking Simulator in a manner similar to the LLRF Lunar Landing Research Facility technique. This sample, collected during the second Apollo 12 extravehicular activity (EVA) of astronauts Charles Conrad Jr. and Alan L. Bean, is a fine-grained rock. Note the glass-lined pits. Viewer can gain an idea of the size of the rock by reference to the gauge on the bottom portion of the number meter.
