Tales of Old Japan (1871) is an anthology of short stories, compiled by Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, Lord Redesdale, writing under the better known name of A.B. Mitford. These stories focus on the varying aspects of Japanese life in centuries past. The book, which was written in 1871, is still regarded as an excellent introduction to Japanese literature and culture, by virtue of its ease of access and supplemental notes by the writer. Also included are the author's eyewitness accounts of a selection of Japanese rituals, ranging from the harakiri and marriage to a selection of sermons. This book had a lasting influence on the Western perception of Japanese history, culture and society, particularly because of one widely known tale about samurai revenge, 'Forty-seven Ronin'.

The sitter's white hair contrasts with youthful features that seem to project an inner light; and the books lining shelves in the background point to a contemplative life. An imprecise inscription at lower left indicates a date of 1897-close to the end of the artist's life. Portrait of Abram Jacob Messir 1841 Sir David Wilkie British, Scottish Wilkie reenergized British genre painting before travelling to Turkey and the Holy Land in 1840 to seek new subjects. His death on shipboard on the return journey was a blow to artist contemporaries. This vivid portrait of a Turkish official belongs to a series of Middle Eastern subjects that are considered Wilkies culminating achievement as a draftsman. To convey the sitters authority, the artist adopted a low viewpoint, and combined chalks and watercolors to create a glowing effect. A journal entry made in Smyrna (modern Izmir, Turkey) indicates that the artist began the commission on January 27, 1841, while an inscription on this sheet confirms completion two days later. The artist typically made such portraits in pairs—letting the patron choose one and retaining the other (the version that belonged to Wilkie is now at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford)..
