The Tay Bridge disaster, view of the broken bridge from the north end. The engineer Thomas Bouch advocated the need for a bridge crossing the Tay for a number of years before building began in 1873. The bridge was said to be unstable, especially during bad weather. On the 28th December 1879, during a treacherous weather conditions the Tay Bridge collapse killing over 75 passengers and staff. Bad workmanship and incorrect materials were blamed for the disaster and Bouch's reputation was disgraced

England. Railway accident suffered by one of the "Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway" trains that covered the route between Salisbury-Weymouth, at 4:30 p.m. on June 3, 1884. The train derailed south of Downton in Wiltshire, eight miles from Salisbury. Forty-one people were injured and four died. Three of them drowned when a carriage overturned in a drainage ditch. This illustration of the transatlantic ocean liner named RMS 'Oceanic' which went on its maiden voyage in 1899, landing in New York in September. It was the largest ocean liner in the world until 1901. It is shown here by way of comparison with buildings on Broadway in New York. The length of the Oceanic was 704 feet (215 meters). The illustration is from the 1901 book titled 'The Progress of Invention in the Nineteenth Century.'.
