Disabled Soldier's War Job- Producing Artificial Limbs, UK, c 1944 Mr T G Phillips operates a lathe at a factory somewhere in Britain. He is producing artificial limbs and uses his own artificial arm to work the lathe. It is probable that this photograph was taken at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, which is famous for the development of artificial limbs and for its work with the rehabilitation of amputees, which began in 1915.

The British Grid System- the work of the Central Electricity Board in Wartime, c March 1945 Mr J Kelly, foreman of a repair and maintenance gang, takes a permit-to-work card, and a coloured flag (which denotes which circuit he will be working on) from the section engineer at an electricity station, probably in Sussex. Maintenance teams have been in heavy demand during the war, repairing electricity lines which have been damaged by enemy attack, but also by anti-aircraft fire and battle practice. According to the original caption, 'as soon as a fault occurs a patrol goes out, locates it, and reports back. The conductor, automatically made dead by the breakage, is isolated and earthed at each end'. It is only once this is done that the permit-to-work card is issued.

William Kerslake, a combustion researcher at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory, examines the setup of a transparent rocket in a Rocket Laboratory test cell. Kerslake joined NACA Lewis the previous summer after graduating from the Case Institute of Technology with a chemistry degree. His earliest professional research concentrated on combustion instability in small rocket engines. While at Case the quiet, 250-pound Kerslake also demonstrated his athletic prowess on the wrestling team. He continued wrestling for roughly a decade afterwards while conducting his research with the NACA. Kerslake participated in Olympic competitions in Helsinki (1952), Melbourne (1956), and Rome (1960). He won 30 national championships in three different weight classes and captured the gold at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City. Kerslake accomplished all this while maintaining his research career, raising a family, and paying his own expenses. A

In the foreground, one of the four staff members at the prison explains a point to one of the prisoners.
