The Last Supper ca. 1325-30 Ugolino da Siena (Ugolino di Nerio) Italian Ugolino da Siena was the most original and accomplished follower of Duccio di Buoninsegna, the greatest Sienese painter of the fourteenth century. Among Ugolino's most important commissions was the multi-panel altarpiece for the high altar of Santa Croce, the Franciscan church in Florence. This painting of the Last Supper formed part of the predella (the lowermost horizontal component) of the now dismembered altarpiece. A reconstruction of the altarpiece's original appearance is possible through an 18th-century drawing, which indicates that the "Last Supper" panel was the left-most of seven predella panels. The altarpiece's central panel, which depicted the Madonna and Child, is now lost. Ugolino's large workshop included his father and two of his brothers, who were also painters. The Nativity. Artist: Attributed to Zanobi Strozzi (Italian, Florence 1412-1468 Florence). Dimensions: 7 3/8 x 17 1/8 in. (18.7 x 43.5 cm). Date: ca. 1433-34.Although long ascribed to Fra Angelico, this enchanting Nativity is probably by his pupil Zanobi Strozzi, who is especially known for his manuscript illuminations. The scene is from the base (predella) of an altarpiece. Especially the arc of angels, beautifully choreographed and dressed in a pleasing array of pastel-colored robes enhanced by gold decorations, is typical of Zanobi's essentially decorative style. The Ottheinrich Bible was commissioned in c.1425 by the Royal Court of Bavaria. The unusually large manuscript was not completed until the following century when the German painter and engraver, Matthias Gerung, was offered 60 Rhenish guilders and winter clothes to illustrate the text. The Bible carries the name of the benefactor who supported its completion. Ottheinrich (1502-1559) was the Prince of Neuburg, Elector Palatine, soldier, pilgrim, reformer and art patron.
