Censer second half 18th century Italian, Naples In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions. Tyrolese Crucifix. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 21 x 15 3/4 in. (53.3 x 40 cm). Date: 1914.Like "Tyrolese Interior," shown nearby, this watercolor was painted during the late summer or autumn of 1914 when Sargent was detained in the Tyrol after Britain and France declared war on Austria. Overtly religious symbols are rare in Sargent's watercolors. This depiction of a carved crucifixion reflects his somber and foreboding mood as he waited to obtain the necessary travel documents to return to London. Roofed crosses were common sites in the Tyrol. Erected along roadsides or open fields, sometimes commemorative in function, such shrines served as spots of prayer and worship for travelers. Sargent exploits a low vantage point to render the lifeless, gaunt figure of Christ against a gnarled tree trunk. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Illustration depicting The Model Parliament. This term was used for the 1295 Parliament of England of King Edward I. The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Ramakien is the Thai version of this epic and has an important influence on Thai literature, art and drama. It is regarded as the National Epic of Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha); full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is located within the precincts of the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th century onwards.
