(125.1 x 311 cm); closed 49 1/4 x 63 1/4 in. (125.1 x 160.7 cm).This fully intact altarpiece was perhaps commissioned by the Guild of the Load Bearers in Bruges for their chapel in the "Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk" (Church of Our Lady). When closed, four saints--Josse, Nicholas, Quirinus, and John the Baptist--and two kneeling donors are visible. When open for the celebration of Mass, worshipers saw displayed for their edification the life and miracles of Saint Godelieve, patroness of Flanders. It grows out of the sleeping figure of Jesse, forefather of a line of kings that included, according to tradition, Salomon, David and Jesus.The branches are filled with the kings of Israel, among them King David with his harp. At top, the Virgin is enthroned with the Christ Child on her lap.

(107.6 x 82.2 cm).Set against the backdrop of a contemporary townscape, this theatrical portrayal of Christ's Way to Calvary recalls an annual civic celebration in Bruges, the Procession of the Holy Blood, which included a reenactment of the episodes shown: Christ carrying the cross aided by Simon of Cyrene, Veronica receiving the icon of the Holy Face, and the Virgin and Saint John waiting for Christ. The procession was the responsibility of the Confraternity of the Holy Blood, whose members follow the armored horseman carrying the group's official standard.The painting reflects a lost work by Van Eyck, known from copies. The Story of Joseph Biagio d'Antonio Italian In a succession of episodes, marked with the names of the chief characters, the painting illustrates the biblical story of Joseph (Genesis 37,39,42-27). In the background to the left is the sale into slavery of Joseph to Potiphar; Joseph fleeing the seductive advances of Potiphar's wife; and his subsequent imprisonment. In the foreground on the right is the dream of the Pharoah and Joseph interpreting it, and, on the left, Joseph greeting his father and kinsmen on their arrival in Egypt.A companion panel (J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles) shows earlier episodes of the story, before Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt. The Tacuinum (sometimes Taccuinum) Sanitatis is a medieval handbook on health and wellbeing, based on the Taqwim al-sihha   ('Maintenance of Health'), an eleventh-century Arab medical treatise by Ibn Butlan of Baghdad. Ibn Butln was a Christian physician born in Baghdad and who died in 1068. He sets forth the six elements necessary to maintain daily health: food and drink, air and the environment, activity and rest, sleep and wakefulness, secretions and excretions of humours, changes or states of mind (happiness, anger, shame, etc). According to Ibn Butln, illnesses are the result of changes in the balance of some of these elements, therefore he recommended a life in harmony with nature in order to maintain or recover one’s health. Ibn Butln also teaches us to enjoy each season of the year, the consequences of each type of climate, wind and snow.
