Panel with Christ Driving the Money-Changers from the Temple early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels (50.147.1-38) are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. As in many late medieval works, the figures are foreshortened within their inhabited surroundings, adding depth and drama to the composition.. Panel with Christ Driving the Money-Chan

Giacomo was started in 1454 by Domenico di Capodistria, and the upper registers were probably completed by Giovanni Dalmata in 1465. The structure is of octagonal plan, with elaborate architectural sculpture on the exterior of the building: the portal decoration is particularly rich in detail. To each side of the door are rows of niches with statues of saints. Directly above the door is the dedicatory inscription and in the lunette of the portal is a bas-relief of the Madonna and Child to whom Ss. Peter and James are presenting two members of the Orsini family. In a semi-circle around the lunette are four angels with the dove of the Holy Spirit, which is flanked by two roundels depicting the Annunciation, the angel Gabriel and the Virgin, and surmounting the portal in a triangular pediment are the coat-of-arms of the Orsini family. Naked grimacing acrobats wrestle and pull violently at each others beards; a snarling beast proudly claims a bone. Similar mischievous, and sometimes mystifying, motifs are often found on corbels set just under the eaves of the roof on the outside of a church.Notre-Dame-de-la-Grande-Sauve, the church from which these corbels come, was situated on one of the routes to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Set next to a great forest (the silva major from which its name comes) and dominating a hill overlooking the Gironde River, its community grew from seven monks at its founding in 1079 to some 300. A statue of Bladud, said to be the son of Ludhudibras and 8th king of the Britons. There is no historical evidence to support his actual existence, but much folklore surrounds his name. Supposedly he ruled for twenty years from 863 BC or perhaps 500 BC, during which time he founded the Roman city of Bath. The statue carries a date of 1699, but is thought to be far older.

Date: ca. 1225.The enthroned Virgin and Child are surrounded by eight apostles, six of whom are identified in the Latin inscription above: Simon, Jude, Matthew, John, Thomas, and, apparently, Barnabas. The border of animal medallions may derive from Islamic decorative sources. The technique of raised and painted gesso on wood, particularly favored in Catalan art at this time, imitates metalwork.
