Torricelli (1608-1647) demonstrated that liquid will rise in a tube unless the weight of the column of liquid is equal to the pressure of the air pressing on an equal section of the reservoir of liquid. The height of a column will depend on the density of the liquid used. William Harvey (1578-1657), English physician, discovered that the blood flows rapidly through a single system of arteries and veins, and estimated the heart pumped 1 liter a minute (modern measure is 4 liters). He disproved the ancient belief that blood consumed by the body at the same rate that it was produced. Portrait ca. 1640.
