British Isles Sketchbook Francis William Edmonds (American, 1806-1863). British Isles Sketchbook, 1841. Graphite on cream, moderately thick, slightly textured wove paper, 4 3/4 x 6 5/16 x 1/4 in. (12.1 x 16 x 0.6 cm). Francis William Edmonds used this sketchbook during his three-week journey through the British Isles, recording important monuments he encountered along the way in places such as Warwick, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Stratford-upon-Avon. In one of the most striking sketches, combining precise outlines and exacting details, Edmonds rendered the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles of Jedburgh Abbey, looming over the Scottish town. Since he was primarily a genre painter, this sketchbook provides a rare example of his work in land- and townscape composition. American Art 1841

Date: 17th century.This large, vigorously worked drawing, made in red chalk on two attached sheets of paper, is a study for a view of ancient Jerusalem for the background of a painted Crucifixion given by the artist to the church of the Chartreuse de Vauvert in Paris (Muse du Louvre, Paris). Champaigne's characteristic fidelity to biblical texts is here manifest in the research that underpinned his conception of the Temple of Solomon, the hilltop structure at upper right. Destroyed before the birth of Christ, but looming large in 17th-century theological and archeological debates, the Temple of Solomon was the subject of several illustrated treatises, including In Ezechielem Explanationes et Apparatus Urbis ac Templi Hierosolymitani published in Rome in 1596 with plans and elevations after designs by Juan Bautista V

On an album leaf in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, dated 1713, he wrote that his sixty years of studying and emulating old masters had passed like a single day. In autumn of the same year, he painted this handscroll, which combines the disparate styles of Juran (act. ca. 960-95), evoked with long, soft brush lines that give texture and contour to the hillsides, and of Yan Wengui (act. ca. 970-1030), suggested by finely textured surfaces executed in crisp short strokes and dots. July 15, 1888 Vincent van Gogh Dutch In the summer of 1888, Van Gogh, who was then living in Arles, made a trip to the small Mediterranean fishing village of Saintes-Maries de la Mer, where he made a painted view of this street with its thatched roofs and smoking chimneys. This drawing was one of fifteen that were sent, in the month of July alone, to Van Gogh's friend, the artist Émile Bernard, in Brittany, to keep Bernard up to date on the work he was doing. Berry Pomeroy Castle (Liber Studiorum, part XII, plate 58) January 1, 1816 Designed and engraved by Joseph Mallord William Turner British Turner distilled his ideas about landscape In "Liber Studiorum" (Latin for Book of Studies), a series of seventy prints plus a frontispiece published between 1807 and 1819. To establish the compositions, he made brown watercolor drawings, and here Dawe is believed to have etched the design onto a copper plate, with Turner adding mezzotint to develop the tone. A wooded landscape is punctuated by the towers of a ruined castle, traditionally identified as Berry Pomeroy Castle in Devon, but possibly Raglan in Wales. An overgrown moat is spanned by a small wooden bridge, and a moor hen skims the water to create a bright reflective trail. The letters "EP" in the upper margin likely stand for Elevated Pastoral and were applied by Turner to landscapes within the set that echo the Arcadian sensibility of Claude..
