Table Cover, early 18th century, Dia.35-3/8 in., silk, satin, China, 18th century, This cover is an extremely finely woven fabric, without the addition of painted pigments to enhance the design. Decorative table covers are relatively rare in Qing textiles. The phoenix imagery and technical refinement of this panel suggest it may have an imperial provenance. The cover depicts a central phoenix roundel surrounded by twelve identical roundels on a lotus-scroll grid pattern.

The Offering to Bacchus (from a set of five Berain Grotesques) designed ca. 1688, woven ca. 1690-1711 Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer French Presenting a statue and musician within a fanciful architectural setting, this tapestry is from a set known as the Berain Grotesques, in reference to the pervasive stylistic influence of Jean Berain (1640-1711), who may even have provided preliminary sketches. The Classical architecture, flora, fauna and figures against the blank ground was in emulation of the Roman wall-paintings excavated in the subterranean chambers of Nero's palace in Rome (erroneously called 'grotti', hence 'grotesques'.) The light-hearted subject matter and whimsical design contrast with the heavier, ornate style that had characterized French tapestry during the third quarter of the seventeenth century. Large Leaf Verdure with Animals and Birds Made 1525-1550 Southern Netherlands. This visually rich tapestry is filled by large leaves, vividly colored flowers, and winding shoots, a style known as large leaf verdure. Numerous real and fantastic animalsóincluding falcons, griffins, lions, monkeys, peacocks, pheasants, and unicornsófly, hide, and perch amidst the greenery of the purely imagined plants. Only a handful of tapestries with the same animals and composition are known, though the same large leaf motif was used for the background of several tapestries depicting religious scenes, as well as in other tapestries to represent what was thought to be a realistic jungle background. It is thus impossible to determine whether this hanging and its companion pieces served a symbolic or decorative functionóalthough these purposes are clearly not mutually exclusive.. Wool, slit, single dovetailed, and double interlocking tapestry weave .
