Arteries of the pelvis and thigh. The abdominal aorta bifurcates, at the level of the pelvis, into two common iliac arteries, right and left. The common iliac artery then divides itself into the internal iliac artery (or hypogastric, supplying the structures of the pelvis) and external iliac arteries (towards the thigh). Leaving the pelvis, the external iliac artery becomes the common femoral artery, which quickly gives rise to the deep femoral artery (supplying the structures of the thigh). The part of the femoral artery located after the bifurcation with the deep femoral artery is called the superficial femoral artery, which descends all along the thigh towards the knee. The deep femoral artery gives several collaterals, including the anterior circumflex artery (also called the lateral circumflex artery or external circumflex artery).
