This is a picture of Hurricane Florence at its peak, over the open waters of the North Atlantic. This hurricane never made landfall over the United States, however after the storm became extra-tropical, it's moisture combined with a storm system over parts of Europe and caused large amounts of flooding across Spain and France.

iss070e008366 (Oct. 22, 2023) --- The International Space Station was orbiting 260 miles above the coast of Somalia on the Indian Ocean as Tropical Cyclone Tej was pictured on the Arabian Sea approaching the coast of Yemen.

STS099-722-077 (11-22 February 2000) ---Both topography and bathymetry combine with wind and sea currents to produce a pattern of sea ice in the extreme southern Sea of Okhotsk, in this scene photographed by one of the STS-99 crew members aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. The rugged shoreline of north Hokkaido and the Kurile Archipelago have channeled northerly winds and surface waters into a gyre here, clearly depicted in the pattern of sea ice.

iss059e006522 (March 30, 2019) --- The International Space Station flew 265 miles above this cloudy formation in the south Indian Ocean.

ISS011-E-10258 (9 July 2005) --- This easterly-looking image from the International Space Station shows Hurricane Dennis after the storm had already crossed Cuba and was heading for the northern Gulf of Mexico. Dennis was a Category 3 storm, packing winds of 115 miles per hour, at the time of exposure and located approximately 385 miles southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi or 280 miles south of Panama City, Florida. The ill-defined eye is in the lower right corner. The black triangle in extreme lower right is part of the Space Station's window.

ISS013-E-71348 (28 August 2006) --- The crewmembers aboard the International Space Station took this picture of Ernesto early afternoon on August 28, 2006. The tropical storm's center was located near 20.3 degrees north latitude and 75.7 degrees west longitude when the photo was taken. Movement was toward the northwest at 9 nautical miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds were at 35 nautical miles with gusts to 45 nautical miles. Ernesto had earlier passed between the east side of the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk Island (the blue area in lower right corner).

ISS017-E-012562 (4 Aug. 2008) --- Tropical Storm Edouard, as photographed from the International Space Station by one of the Expedition 17 crewmembers onboard, from a vantage point of 220 statute miles above the Earth, stirs in the Gulf of Mexico roughly 24 hours prior to landfall at a point east of Galveston, Texas.

S115-E-06692 (17 Sept. 2006) --- Hurricane Helene was captured at 18:20:14 GMT, Sept. 17, 2006 with a digital still camera, equipped with a 20-35mm lens, by one of the crewmembers aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The center of the storm was located near 20.9 degrees north latitude and 49.0 degrees west longitude, while moving northwest. At the time the photo was taken, the sustained winds were 90 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 110 nauticalmiles per hour.

iss064e059496 (April 14, 2021) --- A cloud formation swirls in the Atlantic Ocean south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands as the International Space Station soared 265 miles above.

Earth observation taken by the Expedition 43 crew

On Nov. 2, 2015 at 09 40 UTC (4 40 p.m. EDT) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image of Tropical Cyclone Chapala as the eye of the storm was approaching the Yemen coast. Chapala maintained an eye, although it appeared cloud-covered. Animated multispectral satellite imagery shows the system has maintained a 15-nautical-mile-wide eye and structure. The image was created by the MODIS Rapid Response Team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland. Chapala weakened from category four intensity a couple days ago while maintaining a course that steers it toward Yemen.

ISS009-E-21151 (1 Sept. 2004) -- Astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke, aboard the International Space Station (ISS) at an altitude of about 230 miles, took this photo of Hurricane Frances at about 9 a.m. EDT Sept. 1 as the storm was centered about 775 miles east-southeast of West Palm Beach, Florida. At the time, Frances was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph.

ISS045E037250 (10/02/2015) --- Hurricane Joaquin as seen from the International Space Station as it approached the Bahamas on Oct. 2, 2015. The intense storm was at Category 4 strength at the time the photo was taken.

Image acquired February 19, 2010: Tropical Cyclone Gelane had sustained winds of 125 knots (230 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 150 knots (275 kilometers per hour), according to a report from the U.S. Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on February 19, 2010. The JTWC reported that Gelane was roughly 315 nautical miles (585 kilometers) east-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius, and was forecast to travel toward the southwest, weakening slightly as it moved.The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on February 19, 2010. Gelanes spiral arms span hundreds of kilometers over the open ocean.

S85-E-5071 (13 August 1997) --- The STS-85 crew members aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery downlinked this oblique, Electronic Still Camera (ESC) view of the Super Typhoon Winnie about halfway between New Guinea and Japan in the Pacific Ocean late evening, August 13, 1997. Maximum sustained winds of 105 knots, gusts up to 130 knots. This photo was taken 14 1/2 hours after STS085-E-5069 was recorded with the same ESC.

ISS013-E-69718 (27 August 2006) --- This vertical view of Hurricane Ernesto was taken by the crew of the International Space Station on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, from an altitude of about 215 miles. At that time, Ernesto was approaching Cuba and was expected to eventually make landfall on the coast of southern Florida. ISS007-E-14892 (15 September 2003) --- This close-up view of the eye of Hurricane Isabel was taken by one of the Expedition 7 crewmembers onboard the International Space Station (ISS).

NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite saw that Tropical Cyclone Winston maintained a pinhole eye as it tracked east of southern Vanuatu's islands in the Southern Pacific Ocean on Feb. 23. Infrared imagery showed bands of strong thunderstorms were wrapping into the low-level center of the storm. Tropical Cyclone Winston was moving past Vanuatu in the South Pacific Ocean on Feb. 23 at 0140 UTC when NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite captured this image of the storm.

Image acquired March 14 - 15, 2010Two fierce tropical cyclones raged over the South Pacific Ocean in mid-March 2010, the U.S. Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported. Over the Solomon Islands, Tropical Cyclone Ului had maximum sustained winds of 130 knots (240 kilometers per hour, 150 miles per hour) and gusts up to 160 knots (300 km/hr, 180 mph). Over Fiji, Tropical Cyclone Tomas had maximum sustained winds of 115 knots (215 km/hr, 132 mph) and gusts up to 140 knots (260 km/hr, 160 mph).The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra and Aqua satellites captured both storms in multiple passes over the South Pacific on March 15, 2010, local time. On Nov. 10 at 03 30 UTC/Nov. 9 at 10 30 p.m. EDT, the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite showed the center of Typhoon Haiyan just south of Hainan Island, China in the South China Sea.

ISS032-E-025605 (9 Sept. 2012) --- Tropical Storm Leslie is clearly seen in the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 9, 2012, as photographed by one of the Expedition 32 crew members aboard the Cupola of the International Space Station. At the time of the photo, Leslie was centered near 33.4 degrees north latitude and 62.1 degrees west longitude (approximately 175 miles east-northeast of Bermuda) moving northward at 14 miles per hour with winds of 60 miles per hour.

NASA's Aqua satellite captured a picture of Tropical Storm Linfa in the South China Sea on July 7 when it was between southern Taiwan and the northern Philippines. Aqua passed over Linfa on July 7 at 05 25 UTC (1 25 a.m. EDT) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument captured a visible image of the storm. Bands of thunderstorms wrapping into the center of circulation from the south, draped over western Luzon. The MODIS image showed the tight concentration of thunderstorms around Linfa's center were located over the South China Sea. Fragmented bands of thunderstorms north of the center were brushing over Southern Taiwan while clouds from another band of fragmented thunderstorms stretched northwest through the Taiwan Strait. On July 7 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Tropical Storm Linfa's maximum sustained winds had increased to 50 knots (57.5 mph/92.6 kph), up from 45 knots (51.7 mph/83.3 kph) six hours before. September 11, 2005, 19:21:12 GMT - Framed by a window on the Destiny lab aboard the Space Station, this image of Hurricane Ophelia was captured by the Expedition 11 crew. The hurricane, located at 31.6 degrees north latitude and 75.8 degrees west longitude, was packing winds of 80 miles per hour when the photo was made.

ISS040-E-030615 (2 July 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, some 227 nautical miles above Earth, photographed this image of Tropical Storm Arthur in the afternoon of July 2, 2014. Arthur was churning in Atlantic waters off the coast of Florida and slowly moving northward at the time the photo was taken. The robotic arm of the Space Station Remote Manipulator System or Canadarm2 is seen at upper right.

One of the STS-51 astronauts used a fish-eye lens on a 35mm cmaera to photograph this view of Hurricane Kenneth in the Pacific Ocean. The Orbiting Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer/Shuttle Pallet Satellite (ORFEUS/SPAS) is still in the cargo bay. The full-disk images every 3 hours from GOES-WEST capture the sweep of a polar vortex that emerged from the arctic at the beginning of the new year, pushing a blizzard into the northeastern USA on January 3, followed by extensive bitter cold (-20 F, windchill -50 F) around the Great Lakes, and single digit temperatures as far south as Atlanta, Georgia. NASA image acquired October 26, 2010 The storm that swept across the center of the United States on October 26 and October 27, 2010, was memorable to those who experienced it because of its strong winds, rain, hail, and widespread tornadoes. Meteorologists get excited about the storm because it set a record for the lowest pressure (not associated with a hurricane) measured over land in the continental United States. At 5 13 p.m. CDT, the weather station in Bigfork, Minnesota recorded 955.2 millibars (28.21 inches of pressure). Pressure is one indicator of a storms strength, and this measurement corresponds to the pressure seen in a Category 3 hurricane. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of the eye of Hurricane Bonnie, located about 500 miles (800 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, at about 11 a.m. local time on July 7, 2022. Initially classified as a tropical storm on July 2, Bonnie intensified to a Category 3 hurricane on July 5. It was later downgraded, and as of July 8, was considered a tropical storm. MISR carries nine cameras pointed at Earth at different angles and each camera viewed Bonnie over a period of seven minutes. The motion of the hurricane between those views provides information on wind speed and direction at the height of the clouds. This visible image of the Great Lakes low pressure area was taken from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite. It was taken at 19:05 UTC (3:05 p.m. EDT) on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011.

ISS009-E-22167 (11 September 2004) --- This image of the eye of Hurricane Ivan, one of the strongest hurricanes on record, was taken Saturday from an altitude of about 230 miles by Astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke, NASA ISS science officer and flight engineer, aboard the International Space Station. At the time, Ivan was in the western Carribean Sea and reported to have winds of 160 mph.

ISS040-E-016570 (21 June 2014) --- From an altitude of 223 nautical miles, one of the Expedition 40 crew members on the International Space Station photographed this nearly vertical image of Guadalupe Island and the Von Karman cloud vortices that are its storied neighbors just off southern California's Pacific Coast.

ISS005- E-15375 (22 September 2002) --- This digital still camera's picture, taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on September 22, 2002, shows the central eye of Hurricane Isidore. The eye become less defined as the hurricane stalled and weakened over the Yucatan Peninsula near Merida. Onboard the orbital outpost for the Expedition Five mission are cosmonauts Valery G. Korzun, commander, and Sergei Y. Treschev, flight engineer, both with Rosaviakosmos; and astronaut Peggy A. Whitson, flight engineer.

As icy cold Canadian air settled over the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. bringing snow and bitter cold, NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured this infrared view of what looks like a frozen blanket over the region. NOAA's GOES-East satellite provides visible and infrared images over the eastern U.S. and the Atlantic Ocean from its fixed orbit in space. In an infrared image taken on Nov. 18 at 12 30 UTC (7 30 a.m. EST), the cold air over the eastern and central U.S. appears to look like a blanket of white, but it's not all snow. Infrared data shows temperature, so although the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. appears to appear is if snow covers the ground, the blanket is in fact cold clouds. However, snow does lie under that blanket in the Upper Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Canada, where it will continue in those areas through Thursday, Nov. 20. Hurricane Irene made landfall near Cape Lookout, N.C. as a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 miles-per-hour.

NASA image acquired August 28, 2012 Early on August 28, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi-NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of Tropical Storm Isaac and the cities near the Gulf Coast of the United States. The image was acquired just after local midnight by the VIIRS day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses light intensification to enable the detection of dim signals. In this case, the clouds of Isaac were lit by moonlight.

S115-E-07080 (18 Sept. 2006) --- A view from the Space Shuttle Atlantis gives a good look of Hurricane Gordon. At the time the photo was taken, with a digital still camera equipped with a 28mm lens, the center of Gordon was near 37.5 north latitude and 46.4 west longitude moving west-northwest. The sustained winds were at 80 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 95 nautical miles per hour.

NASA Sees Severe Weather from Central to Eastern US A vigorous weather system has generated severe weather over the mid-section of the U.S. and satellites are providing a look at it as it is moving toward the East Coast. NASA and NOAA satellites have been tracking a storm system that has generated flooding and tornadic thunderstorms in the central U.S. and is expected bring severe weather to the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, data from NOAA's GOES-East satellite were used to create images and an animation of the movement of the powerful storm. On April 30, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured a visible image of the storms moving over eastern Texas and Louisiana. Hilary is a small but strengthening hurricane, with hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from the center. Tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 60 miles (95 km). Hilary began when Tropical Depression 9E formed on July 21. By July 22 at 11 p.m. EDT, the depression strengthened into a tropical storm and was re-named Hilary. At 5 a.m. EDT on Monday, July 24, 2017, Hilary rapidly intensified into a hurricane. ISS039-E-005762 (29 March 2014) --- One of the Expedition 39 crew members aboard the International Space Station on March 29 used a 14mm lens on a digital still camera to photograph this pre-winter storm located just off the coast of southwestern Australia. Dorian is expected to maintain its current intensity through Thursday and move northward along the Florida coast toward Georgia and the Carolinas.

An extratropical cyclone named Xynthia brought hurricane-force winds and high waves to Western Europe at the end of February 2010, CNN reported. Winds as fast as 200 kilometers (125 miles) per hour reached as far inland as Paris, and at the storms peak, hurricane-force winds extended from Portugal to the Netherlands. Hundreds of people had to take refuge from rising waters on their rooftops. By March 1, at least 58 people had died, some of them struck by falling trees. NASA's SeaWinds radar instrument eyed the center of a massive hurricane -- Floyd -- as it ripped past Georgia and the Carolinas Wednesday afternoon, September 15, then marched toward a midnight strike at Cape Fear, North Carolina.

The brightly colored image taken by the small, experimental satellite TEMPEST-D (Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems Demonstration) captures Hurricane Florence over the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 11, 2018. A miniaturized microwave radiometer onboard TEMPEST-D reveals the eye of the storm surrounded by towering, intense rain bands. The green areas highlight the extent of the rain being produced by the storm, with the most intense rain shown in the yellow and red areas.
