Garde Mobile des Departements', Siege of Paris, 1870-1871. Print from a series titled Souvenirs du Siege de Paris. After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870, besieging the city until its eventual surrender in January 1871. The Garde Nationale was an army recruited from the citizenry of Paris to defend it against any Prussian assault. They were instrumental in the overthrow of the government in March 1871 and the establishment of the Paris Commune. From a private collection.

La Colonelle', Paris Commune, 1871. Cartoon from a series titled Types de la Commune. The Paris Commune was established when the citizens of Paris, many of them armed National Guards, rebelled against the policies of the conservative government formed after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The left-wing regime of the Commune held sway in Paris for two months until government troops retook the city in bloody fighting in May 1871. The events of the Commune were an inspiration to Karl Marx as well as later communist leaders including Lenin, Trotsky and Mao. From a private collection.

Private Smith (late Shinio, the popular juggler) appreciably lowers the protective value of his section's shrapnel helmets by practising his celebrated plate and basin spinning act. Originally an amateur artist, Bairnsfather's cockney humour displayed in his view of the Front (he served in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment until December 1916) was popular. He became well-known through his work for the Tatler and the Bystander during this period. Date: 1917

George William Frederick Charles, 2nd Duke of Cambridge (1819-1904). English soldier; cousin of Queen Victoria; field-marshal; commander-in-chief of army 1887. In the Crimean (Russo-Turkish) War 1853-1856 he commanded a division in 1854 and was present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann. Cartoon by Edward Linley Sambourne in the Punch's Fancy Portraits series from 'Punch' (London, 29 October 1881) at the time he was created a Knight of the Thistle.
