Sinbad the Sailor is of Middle Eastern origin. His tale is, in modern times, often connected with and/or included in The Thousand and One Nights, or the Arabian Nights, but it originally was not part of it. On Sinbad's second voyage, the bird monster known as a roc takes him to the valley of the giant snakes. The snakes are food for the rocs. Merchants come here to gather the diamonds. They throw meat chunks to snakes to divert their attention so they can get diamonds.

In Greek mythology, the sphinx was a monstrous winged creature with the head of a female. It met any traveler/visitor trying to enter the city of Thebes and asked the person to answer a riddle (what walks on four legs when it is young, two in as an adult, and three as an old person - answer - human). Death was the reward for all who failed to answer. Oedipus answered the question, as seen here with the sphinx and the skeltons of those who failed, and was able to enter Thebes. Oedipus was the mythical king of Thebes. But the oracle of Apollo at Delphi had told his father Laius that a son of Laius and his wife Jocasta would kill Laius. When Oedipus was born, Laius had given Oedipus to a servant with orders to abandon the infant. The servant could not In time, Oedipus came back to Thebes, unaware of his true background, and met the sphinx, solved the riddle and entered the city.

Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - January 12, 1865) (Japanese: 川国貞, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III 三代川豊国 ) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. Utagawa Kunisada II (川国定)(1823-1880) was a Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker, one of three to take the name 'Utagawa Kunisada'. A pupil of Utagawa Kunisada I, he signed much of his early work 'Baidō Kunimasa III'. He took the name Kunisada after marrying his master's eldest daughter in 1846. He changed his name once more following his master's death, to Toyokuni III. However, since there were three artists called Toyokuni before him, Kunisada II is now often known as Toyokuni IV. The caption for this image by NC Wyeth that accompanies the tale of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe reads: ' I laid me down flat on my belly on the ground and began to look for the place. Robinson Crusoe is a novel written by the English novelist Daniel Defoe and published in 1719. A fictional autobiography, it tells the tale of an English castaway named Robinson Crusoe (seen here on cliff with spyglass) who spent 28 years on a remote tropical island near Venezuela before he was rescued. Newell Convers Wyeth, known as N. C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators.
