Sanders, engraving 1803, Satan holding a balance to which, on one end is attached a hot-air balloon with a bishop, possibly the Duke of York, and another man standing on top, its lightness has skewed the balance to end over end; at the other end is a parachute with three men standing in the basket, it is about to crash on the coast of England.

John Bull gives a slave to a slave to freedom while holding his own English wife on the line. According to the caption, the woman is publicly offered for sale. This refers to the English use of 'Wife Selling'. Ludus pro patria (Patriotic Games) ca. 1883-89 Pierre Puvis de Chavannes French Puviss evocation of ancient France shows young athletes training with pikes (piques in French), the traditional weapon of the Picardy region and reputedly the origin of the provinces name. One man has thrown his spear into the air and prepares to catch it—a rare moment of spontaneity in Puviss oeuvre. This work is a replica, reduced in size, of a mural that the painter completed in 1882 and installed in 1888 in the Musée de Picardie in Amiens.
