Floating Docks -- A sectional box type of floating dock, designed to lift ships up to 52 tons displacement. It is now owned by the Admiralty. The overall length is 859 ft 6 inches. The dock is electrically operated with electricity supplied from the shore and there are two electric travelling cranes. British yards have led in the construction of floating docks, and have built the majority in existence in all parts of the world. Among advantages of floating docks compared with ordinary dry docks are their mobility, which is particularly useful in time of war, since they can be moved wherever the strategic position requires. Floating Acre Of Concrete -- Tugs slowly inch a huge 400-foot floating dry dock, made of enough concrete to cover an acre of ground five inches thick, through draw bridges here today, on route to a shipyard for fittings. The $4,157,000 oceanic dock -- largest of its kind ever built in this country -- will be turned over to the Navy after being outfitted with necessary equipment, including crew's quarters and gun emplacements. The World's Largest Mechanical Excavator -- The giant excavator at work on open-cast coal mining in Northumberland. A hug 1,100 ton drag-line excavator is now in operation for the digging of open-cast coal at Ewart Hill, Bedlington, Northumberland. The over 180 feet in length. Electrically driven the machine can "Walk" at one-month of a mile per hour. The grab-weighing 20 tons when empty, lefts 25 tons tons at one snatch.February 03, 1949.
