KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - A Kennedy Space Center technician walks towards the intersection of the crawlerway beside a crawler-transporter moving Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) number 3, with a set of twin solid rocket boosters bolted atop, during the second engineering analysis vibration test on the crawler and MLP. The crawler is moving at various speeds up to 1 mph in an effort to achieve vibration data gathering goals as it leaves the VAB, travels toward Launch Pad 39A, and then returns. The boosters are braced at the top for stability. The primary purpose of these rollout tests is to gather data to develop future maintenance requirements on the transport equipment and the flight hardware. Various parts of the MLP and crawler transporter have been instrumented with vibration data collection equipment.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, deconstruction of the Mercury Mission Control Center is under way. The original building, constructed between 1956 and 1958, was last modified in 1963. The center succumbed to the two worst enemies of structures along the space coast - time and salt air - necessitating that it be demolished as a safety measure. The facility served as mission control during all the Project Mercury missions, as well as the first three flights of the Gemini Program. The center housed the flight controllers whose duty was to take over flight control after liftoff and follow it through until splashdown. Additionally, it supported vehicle checkout, spacecraft tracking, and astronaut training. With Gemini IV, mission control moved to Houston, and the facility took on the roles of launch control and tracking station. In 1999, much of the equipment and furnishings from the flight control area was moved to Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Compl

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the payload changeout room, or PCR, on Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, workers make small adjustments to the payload ground-handling mechanism, or PGHM, that will remove the cargo from the payload canister. The cargo comprises four carriers holding various equipment for the STS-125 mission aboard space shuttle Atlantis to service NASAs Hubble Space Telescope. The PGHM removes payloads from a transportation canister and installs them into the shuttle. It is essentially NASAs largest fork-lift. Atlantis is targeted to launch Oct. 10.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - An overview of the floor grid in the RLV Hangar reveals some of the more than 32,000 pieces recovered from Columbia to date. The Columbia Reconstruction Project Team is identifying pieces and placing them on the grid in a configuration of the orbiter. The team will attempt to reconstruct the orbiter as part of the investigation into the accident that caused the destruction of Columbia and loss of its crew as it returned to Earth on mission STS-107.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, engineers complete final checkouts of a small rocket on its launch stand as part of Rocket University. The goal was to test its systems and to verify that it performed as designed. As part of Rocket University, the engineers are given an opportunity to work a fast-track project to develop skills in developing spacecraft systems of the future. As NASA plans for future spaceflight programs to low-Earth orbit and beyond, teams of engineers at Kennedy are gaining experience in designing and flying launch vehicle systems on a small scale. Four teams of five to eight members from Kennedy are designing rockets complete with avionics and recovery systems. Launch operations require coordination with federal agencies, just as they would with rockets launched in support of a NASA mission.
