The Submersion of Pharaoh's Army in the Red Sea 1510-1520 Italy. The grand scale of Titianís twelve-sheet woodcut (see 1957.12.1ñ12) mimics history paintings and large wall hangings. The assembled composition would fit only on a massive wall, a use confirmed by the total lack of early impressions. Only this 1549 state is known, printed from woodblocks studded with wormholes, which appear in the image as tiny white dots. The inscription at lower center of The Submersion describes the Israelitesí persecution under the Egyptian pharaoh and his armyís fate when they followed Moses into the Red Sea. The publisher opportunistically refers to the ìgreat and immortal handî of Titian in this legend, though the artist was still very much alive.. Woodcut in black on ivory laid paper . Titian

This fine panel (better preserved at the left than at the right) is characteristic of a number of his works that feature catastrophic, fantastic landscapes. Also, Hieronymus Bosch's Lisbon Triptych of the <i>Temptation of Saint Anthony</i> functioned as a source for the panels' Christian iconography and compositional elements. The artist cleverly conflated the style and motifs of Bles and Bosch to satisfy a local and foreign art market demand for small-scale and easily transportable paintings. Tomb with Sphinxes and an Owl 1779-1784 France. This invention of an imaginary Egyptian tomb by the French artist, architect, and stage designer Louis-Jean Desprez was one of a set of four aquatints on the theme that he designed while living in Rome. It combines a sense of theatrical drama with references to Egyptian antiquities, which enjoyed a vogue at the time.The printís bizarre fantasy (made horrific by the exposed corpse in the open tomb), enhanced by dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, makes it a document of some importance among the early manifestations in art of pre-romantic sensibilities.. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments.
