Writing Desk (Bundai) with Landscape and Geese 17th century Japan Lacquer writing desks were usually created in sets with boxes (suzuribako) to hold paper and writing implements. The earliest forms of the low table are documented in medieval handscroll paintings; most are undecorated and have shorter legs. The size and shape of the writing table became standardized in the Muromachi period (1392-1573) and remained unchanged through the Edo period, as seen in paintings representing Murasaki Shikibu at her desk composing The Tale of Genji. This desk, prepared in homage to earlier examples, has a landscape with a waterfall and geese among waves. The maki-e decoration covers only a small portion of the writing surface, in keeping with the desks function. The style of the sparse decoration recalls Japanese appreciation of Chinese ink paintings introduced by Zen monasteries.. Writing Desk (Bundai) with Landscape and Geese. Japan. 17th century. There were two variants for The Sea at Bognor, with the cartouche, or ìscarabîóin opaque white or rose ink; it was printed in green and gold for Last Poppies, and a white and gold variation was used for a small landscape entitled The Thames, Evening. The mount was also produced in shades of red and gold for Chelsea Palaces and in black and gold for Anemonies. The latter is placed on a drawing for the mount with a black printed cartouche. The remaining color subjects were accompanied by Rousselís Shell Pattern Mount, which was likewise printed in a variety of color combinations.. Landscape (from Sketchbook X). Artist: William Trost Richards (American, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1833-1905 Newport, Rhode Island). Dimensions: 5 x 7 1/2 in. (12.7 x 19.1 cm). Date: 1885.This sketchbook contains fifty-one drawings in graphite and ink, primarily of Pacific Northwest landscape and marine subjects. The addition to the Museum's collection of this and one other sketchbook (1992.2.1) of New England and Pennsylvania landscape and marine subjects by Richards virtually completes a representation of the range of the artist's graphic achievement. The books are remarkable for both highly finished compositions and for pages of rapid notes probably taken during strolls through the countryside. The pages testify to Richard's tireless pleasure in observing nature, to the sketchbooks utility as a rehearsal place for his hand, and to the vivid impressions he could produce with the simplest of means. Not least of all, they offer a key understanding to the artist's uncanny facility in
