Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fuji Sanju-Rokkei) is the title of two series of woodblock prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Andi Hiroshige, depicting Mount Fuji in differing seasons and weather conditions from a variety of different places and distances. The 1852 series are in landscape orientation; the 1858 series are in portrait orientation. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige.

The "Armor-Hanging Pine" was a grand, oddly shaped tree from which, legend has it, the warrior Minamoto Yoshiie (1041-1108) hung his armor when he rested there on his way north to subjugate the Abe clan. By Hiroshige's time, the tree would have been about eight hundred years old. The bluff on which it stoodHakkeizaka, or "Eight Views Slope"was named for its panorama. Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The winter group, numbers 99 through 118, begins with a scene of Kinryuzan Temple at Akasaka, with a red-on-white color scheme that is reserved for propitious occasions. Snow immediately signals the season and is depicted with particular skill: individual snowflakes drift through the gray sky, while below, on the roof of a distant temple, dots of snow are embossed for visual effect. During summer and early fall, the Sumida River was the scene of a custom known as "taking in the cool of the evening." Activity centered at Ryōgoku Bridge, where an endless variety of entertainment was offered on both land and water. The ideal place was not in the crowded stalls of the bridgehead plazas but rather in one of the nearby restaurants or in an individually chartered pleasure boat on the river. Fireworks were an indispensable feature of evenings on the river. By the mid-seventeenth century, they were so popular that the threat of fire led authorities to issue decrees restricting their use to the Sumida River. Asian Art 8th month of 1858

(36.2 x 23.7 cm). The Hall of Thirty-Three Bays was under the jurisdiction of Eitaiji Temple, whose garden was the subject of the previous print. This view from behind the elongated hall is a skillful expression of the use of the long rear veranda as an archery range. A shooting trial seems to be underway, with the contestants expected to shoot the arrows so that they stayed within the confines of the veranda, clearing the length of the building without hitting any part of it. Morning view (Nihon-bashi, asa-no-kei) subtitle of second state: gyoretsu furude (processional Standard-bearers). This print shows the middle class during the late Edo period. Located on the bridge over the Kamo River, in the early morning, is a seen of daimyo's procession crossing bridge, two porters carrying red boxes followed by two standard-bearers. Just past the bent over figures are rows of samurai marching in unison and then a dark silhouette of the city roofs and shops, and stores. In the forefront are six street hawkers, all carrying loads of heavy merchandise. Caught in the middle is a fishmonger balancing a shallow tray of fish on his head. Utagawa Yoshitora (active 1850-1880) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist and book illustrator. Though both his date of birth and death are unknown, what is known is that Yoshitora was born in Edo and that he eventually became Utagawa Kuniyoshi's oldest pupil. Yoshitora soon showed excellence in his prints of bijinga (beautiful women), kabuki actors and warriors, producing over 60 print series and illustrating more than 100 books. He was imprisoned and manacled for forty days by censors who interpreted one of his prints as a criticism of authority, which resulted in his expulsion from Kuniyoshi's studio, though he still continued to illustrate prolifically. From the 1860s onwards, Yoshitora began to produce Yokohama-e prints of foreigners after Japan's rapid modernisations and opening up. He would collaborate on many landscape series and began working in newspapers in the Meiji Period. His last known work appeared in 1882.

Hokuju was one of the best students of Hokusai. He produced very original landscapes with cubist landforms, stylized clouds and photographic figures. His curiously modern landscapes were apparently influenced by the Western art concept which was very new to his era.

The arched bridge in the distance would have immediately identified this site for an Edo viewer as Kameido Tenjin Shrine, on the eastern fringe of Edo. The shrine was dedicated in the early 1660s as a part of the campaign to open the east bank of the Sumida for urban settlement in the wake of the devastating Meireki fire of 1657. The dedication to Tenjin, the deified Sugawara Michizane (845-903), patron saint of learning and calligraphy, is said to have been inspired by the personal veneration of the shogun Ietsuna (1641-80).
