The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaid ( Kiso Kaid Rokujky-tsugi) or Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Road, is a series of ukiyo-e works created by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Keisai Eisen (1790-1848). There are 71 total prints in the series (one for each of the 69 post stations and Nihonbashi; Nakatsugawa-juku has two prints). The common name for the Kiso Kaid is 'Nakasend' or 'Central Mountain Highway', so this series is salso commonly referred to as the Sixty-nine Stations of the Nakasend. The Nakasend was one of the Five Routes constructed under Tokugawa Ieyasu, a series of roads linking the historical capitol of Edo with the rest of Japan. The Nakasend connected Edo with the then-capital of Kyoto. It was an alternate route to the Tkaid and travelled through the central part of Honsh, thus giving rise to its name, which means 'Central Mountain Road'. Folding screens served as temporary dividers in traditional Japanese open-plan architectural spaces. This pair was inspired by Japans most celebrated work of literature, the Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu, an attendant to the empress in the early 11th-century imperial court. The novel follows the love life of the “Shining Prince” Genji and delves into the psychological states of his many companions. Distinct episodes are nestled within a matrix of golden clouds and landscape elements. Each screen includes six episodes presented in a nonlinear fashion, capturing scattered highlights of the story.

Hamamatsu: A party of coolies warming themselves by a bonfire beside a large tree, a traveller, with a pipe in hand, looking on, and a peasant woman carrying a child on her back, approaching from the right. Act 11, Part 1 The Approach to the Night Attack (Juichidanme ichi, yochi oshiyose), from the series The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers (Chushingura) 1829-1844 Japan. The story of The Forty-seven Samurai is based on events that occurred at the beginning of the 18th century and is one of the longest plays in the Kabuki repertoire that is still performed. The drama recounts the death of Enya Hangan, who was forced to commit suicide by the evil Moronao, and the revenge sought by Hanganís loyal retainers for their lordís death. In the scene depicted here (which occurs toward the end of the play), the forty-seven loyal samurai are crossing Ryogoku Bridge on their way to Moronaoís mansion where they will eventually slay him. This print from one of Hiroshiges later T?kaid? series completely reconceives the scene at Seki. An earlier series showed an entourage of a daimy?, preparing to leave an inn, but this view plunges the station into the depths of a dark winter. Daimy? were regional military rulers during Japans Edo period. As the central government required them to live in the capital, Edo, in alternating years, daimy? processions along the T?kaid? thoroughfare were a frequent sight. This print, however, emphasizes the pilgrimage route to Japans principal site of religious worship, the Ise Shrine, indicated by the traditional red gate to the shrine.

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It irepresents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The series continues with summer. Summer amusements of the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Months are represented in numbers 43 through 72. Evening outings in pleasure boats on the Sumida River were taken along the many famous bridges of Edo, where endless varieties of entertainment were offered. This scene portrays samurai retainers practicing military skills at the Takata Riding Grounds in the hilly northwestern suburbs of Edo. It is a reminder that half of Edo's population consisted of a hereditary warrior class that, even after more than two centuries of peace, was still expected to maintain its military skills. The practice of the martial arts was on the rise at the time this print appeared, reflecting a mounting foreign crisis and a heightened governmental emphasis on education and training. Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fuji Sanju-Rokkei) is the title of two series of woodblock prints by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Andi Hiroshige, depicting Mount Fuji in differing seasons and weather conditions from a variety of different places and distances. The 1852 series are in landscape orientation; the 1858 series are in portrait orientation. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. Drinking in the Bamboo Garden 1773 Luo Ping Chinese Painted at the end of Luo Ping's first Beijing sojourn, this depiction of a gathering beneath a lantern to celebrate the first full moon of the year commemorates a moment of social interaction between the artist and his patron-friends. The "Bamboo Garden" mentioned in Luo's inscription may refer to the famous Yangzhou property he had visited with his mentor, Jin Nong (1687-1763). The scene represents a nostalgic evocation of the southern metropolisa vision his Beijing patrons would have found appealing.The clearly articulated composition and painterly effects, indicative of Luo's gradual departure from Jin Nong's artistic legacy, are characteristic of his mid-career.. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (January 1, 1798 - April 14, 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He is associated with the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes. His artwork was affected by Western influences in landscape painting and caricature.

Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, actually composed of 118 woodblock landscape and genre scenes of mid-19th century Tokyo, is one of the greatest achievements of Japanese art. The series includes many of Hiroshige's most famous prints. It represents a celebration of the style and world of Japan's finest cultural flowering at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The people of Edo marked the autumn season with excursions to scenic attractions and harvest festivals, and viewing fall foliage at its peak. The prints numbered 73 through 98 suggest the activities of this season in Japan, the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Months. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 October 12, 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was also referred to as Andi Hiroshige (an irregular combination of family name and art name) and by the art name of Ichiyusai Hiroshige.
