4,000 Year Old Industry Continues in London. Industry of gold-beating which was carried on in the time of ancient Egypt of 4,000 years ago, is still to be seen in London, the only change being that the hammers employed are now of iron and not of bronze. A skilled workman can produce a leaf of the thickness of 1/250,000 part of an inch, or a hundred time thinners than a cigarette paper. In one gold-beating workshop in Bloomsbury, may be seen workmen of ages ranging form 20 to 70 years, who daily weald their 20 lb. iron headed hammers, in the gold-beating industry. Girls are employed in the making of gold-leaf books. O.P.S. Some of the beaters of all ages photographed at their Bloomsbury workshop.

"Desert Gold".Seven-eights of the world's supply of Gum Arabic - used as the adhesive on postage stamps, envelopes, lables etc., as well as for medicinal purposes and certain types of confectionary - is produced in the Sudan where for- 200 years it has been the most important export. Only in the last 20 years has it boon topped by cotton as to Sudan's most valuable product. These pictures show various stages in the production of Gum Arabic called "Desert Gold" - for, from the making of incisions in the bark of the acacia tree to its marketing locally ready for transport -and shipment to various parts of the world, to the extent of 15-20 thousand tons annually, it is valued at nearly one million pounds sterling. Tin was discovered several centuries ago in the Kathu district of Phuket and was mined until 1992 when the last mine on Phuket closed. The tin business drew migrant workers from South China to Phuket, and many of these Overseas Chinese settled permanently in the area.

Tobacco was the main cash crop for much of Eastern NC in the 1960's. The flu-cured tobacco required that after picking the leaves be strung on poles and put inside a tobacco barn, where the leaves were slowly heated and dried. The leaves turn from green to a golden brown, and ready for auction. Families worked together to do this tedious work, which was their main source of income for the year.

A worker at Chieu Hoi III's "noodle factory" pouring liquid from mashed rice into a sack for it to harden. The resulting cylindrical block is later strained into noodles. The factory, built with materials contributed by Supply Battalion's Civil Affairs Office, could produce 25 gallons of noodles on a good day.

San Francisco's Chinatown was the port of entry for early Hoisanese and Zhongshanese Chinese immigrants from the Guangdong province of southern China from the 1850s to the 1900s. The area was the one geographical region deeded by the city government and private property owners which allowed Chinese persons to inherit and inhabit dwellings within the city. The majority of these Chinese shopkeepers, restaurant owners, and hired workers in San Francisco Chinatown were predominantly Hoisanese and male. Many Chinese found jobs working for large companies seeking a source of labor, most famously as part of the Central Pacific on the Transcontinental Railroad. Other early immigrants worked as mine workers or independent prospectors hoping to strike it rich during the 1849 Gold Rush.
