Reportage on the TIRO lab (Oncology Imaging and Radiotherapy Transporters), an interdisciplinary structure within the Medicine Department of Nice University in France, grouping clinicians and biologists. The fundamental research is devoted to providing answers to the clinicians needs. One of the labs aims is to develop a precise molecular diagnosis for cancer, by identifying its metabolome from samples taken. The molecular characteristics of the tumour should enable the oncologist to provide treatment adapted to each patient. Metabolomics: analysis of metabolites present in glioma removed from a brain tumour and tissue removed from a breast tumour.

Reportage on the Vaccine Research Institutes (VRI) immunomonitoring platform. The Vaccine Research Institutes aim is to speed up the development of an HIV vaccine. It stems from the ANRSs (French national AIDS and hepatitis research agency) vaccine programme. Research is carried out on the mononuclear cells in the blood. The lab receives blood samples from people who have, and havent had the vaccine. Researchers use the luminex technology (Bioplex 200), which allows the dosage of analytes. Cytokine concentration is measured in the samples of T Lymphocyte cells.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon Drilling Platform exploded and sank, causing the largest oil spill yet recorded. Samples from the oil spill were collected by Louisiana USGS scientists Greg Swayze and Charlie Demas and sent for analysis in Menlo Park, CA. Before performing a liquid chromatograph column analysis on the samples, researcher Pam Campbell dissolves them in solvents. These solvents allow for greater identification of the compounds within the sample.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Inside a laboratory in the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, April Spinale, a payload integration specialist with Bionetics, cleans the vials that will hold the Protein Crystal Growth 2 samples for the Center for Advancement of Science in Space, or CASIS. The experiment is one of many that will be delivered to the International Space Station on the SpaceX-4 commercial cargo resupply mission. The CASIS experiment will be used in the National Laboratory on the space station.Kennedy's ISS Ground Processing and Research Project Office is providing the necessary laboratories, equipment, supplies and consumables for 61 principal investigators, including 17 from other countries, as they prepare their science experiments for flight. The SpaceX-4 flight is targeted to launch in September 2014.
