Inside the Space Life Sciences Laboratory at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Dr. Eric Koch, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Florida, demonstrates preparations for bobtail squid on May 20, 2021, for a trip to the International Space Station aboard SpaceXs 22nd Commercial Resupply Services mission. The experiment will examine the effects of spaceflight on the molecular and chemical interactions between beneficial microbes and their animal hosts. Amimals, including humans, rely on microbes to maintain a healthy digestive and immune system. UMAMI is one of several experiments bound for the space station in the Dragon capsule atop the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission is scheduled to lift off from Launch Complex 39A on June 3.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Inside a laboratory in the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Ray Polniak, a quality assurance specialist with Dynamac, prepares vials for the Crystal Protein Growth 2 experiment for an acceptance leak test. Polniak is a consultant for the Center for Advancement of Science is Space, or CASIS. The experiment is one of many that will be delivered to the International Space Station on the SpaceX-4 commercial cargo resupply mission.Kennedy's ISS Ground Processing and Research Project Office is providing the necessary laboratories, equipment, supplies and consumables for 61 principal investigators, including 17 from other countries, as they prepare their science experiments for flight. The SpaceX-4 flight is targeted to launch in September 2014.

Capt. Kevin W. O'Brien, the operations flight commander of Air Force ROTC Detachment 520, is a Ph.D. candidate in Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he is doing research on using air pressure to morph the shape of aerodynamic wings. O'Brien supervises the cadet wing at Cornell in the conduct of Leadership Laboratory activities, teaches aerospace studies and leadership courses and manages programs to identify, attract, and retain cadets for the Air Force ROTC program.

NASA Kennedy Space Center's Trent Smith conducts a quantum levitation demonstration, using liquid nitrogen, metal and a magnetic track, for students and their sponsors in the Center for Space Education at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Teams from across the state of Florida were gathered at Kennedy for the finals of the Zero Robotics Middle School Summer Program national championship. The five-week program allows rising sixth- through ninth-graders to write programs for small satellites called SPHERES (Synchronized, Position, Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites). Finalists saw their code tested aboard the International Space Station.

Scientists at MSFC have been studying the properties of Aerogel for several years. Aerogel, the lightest solid known to man, has displayed a high quality for insulation. Because of its smoky countenance it has yet to be used as an insulation on windows, but has been used to insulate the walls of houses and engine compartments in cars. It was also used in the space program as insulating material on the rover Sojourner, aboard the Mars Pathfinder. MSFC is one of the many research facilities conducting experiments to unlock the smoky properties of aerogel and make it a clear substance. MSFC researchers believe that by taking this research to space, they can resolve the problem of making aerogel transparent enough to see through. So far, recent space experiments have been encouraging. The samples produced in microgravity indicate a change in the microstructure of the material as compared to ground samples.
